NY Senate: it will not be Cuomo... Caroline has Inside Track on Senate Seat
Edited on Mon Jan-12-09 03:53 PM by Roberto1223
An interesting analysis by one of the guests from Norah O"Donnell (Nicholas Confessore)who said that Andrew Cuomo is not going to be appointed to Hillary's seat because that would make it difficult for the Democrats to go into the 2010 election cycle with every candidate appointed to their position (Paterson, Cuomo, the Comptroller, and the AG) except Chuck Schumer. It Andrew Cuomo were appointed to the Senate, the Democratic Speaker of NY House, Sheldon then will get his caucus to appoint someone to Cuomo's AG position...which would be a loyalist to Sheldon and not Paterson. So, with Caroline Kennedy getting good press recently and a secret meeting between Paterson and Caroline this weekend (and with Obama supposedly putting pressure on Paterson to name Caroline Kennedy, who gave him a great boost to his primary fight with Hillary in April of last year) it seems that there will be a perfect storm to ride Caroline into the Senate by week's end.

2. I don't see why that
should be such a problem. If the appointees do a good job then why would there be problems regarding the 2010 election cycle?

6. It may be the GOP may be trying to smear the Dem ticket as
"appointed", not tested and not elected by the NY state citizens. Also, there is no great fundraiser in sight, maybe Cuomo but remember he failed in his previous Gubernatorial campaign because he could not raise enough money for it...and was helped by Spitzer's popularity to win AG in the last election cycle. I do not think that Paterson is very popular in NY...he has support which is one mile wide but one inch thick.

42. Either we give it to her now, or she will win in 2010
If she wins in 2010, first beating the (D) incumbent in the primary, it will make the Gov look...lame...
It is not like the GOP has a shot at the seat. What///Ghouliani? His Florida firewall in 2008 ended any shot he had at beating Kennedy. Ghouls might beat Patterson, but no one is beating Kennedy.

5. So, a guest on MSNBC said so. That does not make it true or false.

It is amusing how people take what some TV talk show says as enlightened truth.

I do not have a dog in this race, but I would not take these types of talks as solid, particularly when you cannot even quote the name of this particular political commentator.

8. Where did you hear that Obama was pushing Paterson to appoint her?
I know he is close with Caroline Kennedy but I find it hard to believe that he is actively pushing her, because, as he said a few weeks ago, he has enough problems with his own replacement (and that was before the Blago scandal broke!) In the wake of the Blago scandal I can't imagine Obama would want to be seen as getting involved with the appointment process in New York.

When she and Teddy stood on the stage with him it gave a big boost to his campaign. She continued to work throughout the campaign and he thought highly enough of her to put her on the committee that picked his veep.

40. Agreed
For that to have been on the table all the way back in January 2008, would have meant plans within plans. It may have been in the backs of their minds she would have *some* role, but would they have really planned to have HC out of her senate seat, as well as primary loser?

Everything has been in flux this year. Also, I don't think that without her involvement in the Obama campaign that Caroline would've stepped forward the way she has.

10. Here's What I've Been Wondering Lately
Barring the fact that Ron B. may've asked outright for money, what's the difference between he and Patterson? Patterson has been dragging his heels on this because he can't decide which choice is more advantageous to him. If he gives it to Cuomo he doesn't have to worry about Andrew running against him for his office, on the other hand if he gives it to Caroline...the benefits are listed above. Another advocate for Caroline is Patterson's father. Apparently, back in the 80's when he was running for office he couldn't get much support from other dems until the day Ted Kennedy walked on stage and stood with him.

22. Paterson hasn't "dragged his heels" he can't make an appointment to the seat
until there is a vacancy.

Hillary Clinton is still Senator Hillary Clinton because she hasn't resigned yet.

When she does, after being confirmed as SoS, Paterson will name a replacement.

I don't think Paterson is heel dragging either, but there's nothing really stopping him yet.

He could've made his choice known on day 1 pending confirmation. And does anyone seriously think Hillary won't be confirmed this week? Paterson has been playing this for all he's worth.

As to why... no idea. I think it would be an incredibly bad idea, actually, for the governor to pick somebody from down-state if he bypasses the big names.

28. For what it's worth, I heard Maloney interviewed on an NPR show last week,
big hmmmmmm right there, but anyway guess what? Every other word was "um" or some other filler which, I realized, sounded perfectly natural. The "you know" business is a big bunch of RW crap that we shouldn't be flaunting and didn't Maloney vote for the IWR?

15. But doesn't that entire theory come from a false assumption?
The problem of a new AG not being loyal to Paterson would only be an issue if the current AG were a Paterson loyalist, and Andrew Cuomo is not. So, losing him and gaining a new AG who isn't loyal to Paterson means that the governor gains and loses nothing. However, appointing Cuomo removes Paterson's most likely contender in the next gubernatorial race.

All that said, I think Paterson may still appoint Caroline Kennedy. I just don't think this analyst is using the best reasoning here.

it's all just heresay and we really don't know what's going to happen.

I like Caroline for the job but I think whomever Paterson appoints will be good because I'm really learning to like my Gov.

I did mention early on that if Cuomo got it the Gov would have to appoint someone to take his job. Musical chairs.

37. I like Paterson but in his State of the State he semed to have no clue
about how to put NY on the road to recovery and was very vague on his budget plans. He has had more than a year to see what's wrong with the state and was somehow disappointed with his SOTS

29. If he's taking this long to make one appointment, imagine how long he'd take to make two.
I see the logic and it's compelling. Dunno why he's dragging this out like a three-volume bodice ripper but I can't imagine NY will put up with the same agony twice.

33. There's a lot to like about politics in New York. Those Empire State Democrats
know how to run compelling political lives.

I write as someone who voted for Hugh Carey and Bella Abzug, volunteering for Bella and also for Mario Cuomo a short while later.

If you are on the hunt for compelling Democratic personalities, it's hard to beat Bella and Mario.

Before them, there was John Lindsay. Republican mayor of NYC, later Democratic presidential candidate. I don't argue that he was perfect but many folks remember him with genuine affection.

Robert F. Kennedy represented the Empire State in the United States Senate.

David Paterson, who impresses me a lot, has a wide range of folks to choose from, all with more than one demonstrable strength. He could choose A. Cuomo after all, or CK, or someone from Long Island or New York City, or upstate, and so forth, and with each choice there's a viable defense of that candidate for the two consecutive elections he or she must face.

For political junkies, New York is almost a mecca.
