I'm still envious of those who will be going.

Inaugural Hell Freezes Over

The shut down of the city—no bridges from Northern Virginia, most of the downtown streets entirely cut off—is forcing key government employees to bed down at their desks, literally. Over at the State Department, essential personnel, which given the present flammable state of the world includes quite a number of people, are going to be sleeping on air mattresses, unveiled for the occasion. Then, post-inauguration, they must negotiate the nearly five miles from their office dorms to Union Station for the presidential ball that hosts the diplomatic corps.

And the State Department gang has it easy. TV news crews being dispatched out “in the field” to cover the Mall and other key gathering points are being told to pack for survival conditions, which includes likely toting along a five-gallon jug to use for bodily functions. Sadly, bathrooms may become the big issue as the big day unfolds. The city’s subway system is planning on locking all of its bathrooms for security reasons (they will post a total of 150 or so port-a-potties outside of the stations, concentrating them in the suburbs, outside of the city itself; Metro may also close some of its escalators to help with crowd control, leaving newly minted riders to walk up steep metal steps 100 to 200 feet high). The rest of the city plans to deploy up to 5,000 jiffy johns, which works out to something on the order of 10,000 people minimum per bathroom, optimistically assuming that not everyone will have to “go.”

No word yet on whether ticket holders for the actual swearing in will get priority in the bathroom lines, but that is also going to require a Herculean exercise in crowd control. Approximately 240,000 tickets, seated and standing room only, are being given away for the actual Obama swearing in at the Capitol. That’s the equivalent of 12 fully packed concerts at Madison Square Garden being seated and then let loose simultaneously. It’s also about the same number of people who came to hear Martin Luther King’s iconic “I Have A Dream” speech, which was delivered in the balmy, picnic-friendly days of late August, without metal detectors and bag searches. Just clearing security to get to your seat or standing spot is going to be the equivalent of a negotiating an outdoor security line at Chicago’s O’Hare. And the potentially million plus more coming to watch on the 10 jumbotrons being set up along the Mall are going to be even farther away.

In fact, entire busloads of inauguration goers from as far away as New England and the Carolinas are, under current plans, going to be dropped en masse at Metro stations and told to buy fare cards and head toward the Mall. New Jersey reporters are actually speculating that there may not be a single available chartered bus left in the entire state; they will all be crawling south on 95 to Washington. That’s scared off lots of people who regularly come into the city, like food wholesalers, who have told groceries and supermarkets that they will not be delivering any new food or other deliveries in the days around the inauguration—this in a city that strips store shelves bare of milk, toilet paper, and bread when forecasters direly intone a prediction of three inches of snow.

And that leaves us with the hell freezing part: an artic air mass is descending on the District for the weekend. Friday’s projected high temperature is 20 degrees, Saturday’s a comparatively balmy 29 and clouds.

1. Tomorrow's my last day of drinking caffeinated beverages. I'll need to be 'self sufficient'
on Inauguration Day.

it I would go. I would deal with all the crowds etc. just to be close on this history making day.

Bring your own bathroom.

"There are times that having access to a compact, portable solution for personal toilet needs is crucial. Perhaps you need something small enough to fit discretely into a large purse or a briefcase for use while traveling. Perhaps you awaken during the night with an intense urge to urinate that doesn't allow you time to walk down the hall to the bathroom.

There are many other times that having a light weight, compact solution for urinary needs is helpful. If you love to camp or fish, are a private pilot who loves to fly small planes, or drive long distances, there often isn't a restroom facility handy. Or maybe you just don't like the smell of public restrooms.

There is a solution that is affordably, discrete, and easy to use for either a man or a woman! The Uriwell® personal toilet is the result of nine years of research and development to find the ideal solution. It has a corrugated shape which allows it to be compacted and expanded. It is also bendable so that it will flex to whatever position is the most comfortable for the person needing to urinate. The flip-top closure is leak proof, ensuring no spillage while fluid is inside the container, and it can be expanded to full size to hold 750 cc's of fluid. Because of the tight seal, there is no tell-tale odor emitted, so no one has to know that you have the device nearby.http://www.biorelief.com/personal-toilet.htm

Does not take care of #2 however.

Or bring a blanket and put it over yourself?
I dunno. Gotta be creative.

8. Wow, busloads to be dropped off at Metro stations...
That's going to be crazy. I've been considering an invitation from my Congressman's office to an inauguration day brunch in a hotel right off the mall, but I'm not sure I could even get into town from where I stay in Northern Virginia.

Should I rsvp yes or no?

10. I was planning to go the day before and stay in Northern Virginia...
...then use the Metro to get into DC on inauguration day, but I hadn't thought about busloads of people being dropped off at those stations that morning.

I'm already going to the event on Jan. 17 in Philly when the Obamas board the train ~ might be better to stay here and go to one of the parties in town.

Despite the craziness, it's cool that so many people want to be in DC!

14. Let people relieve themselves in the street.
Why not? Washington's homeless do it all the time. It might drive home to those rich, comfortable, insulated showcase-liberals, who want to "be a part of history," exactly what history is like for the poorest Americans. You expect a big party where you can prove how you were on the right side? A little reality in everyday American life would redirect your attention away from your own navels.

Nothing would bring the commonality of rich and poor to light more than answering nature's call out in the open, like a cell phone call, wherever you can find a convenient sewer.

In fact, housing for the visitors could be realistic, too. The Washington rich are finding out that no one has the money to rent out their "sleeping space" in their Georgetown condos for the inaugural. Reasonable accommodations can be found where Washington's poor find them, the steam grates on the sidewalk. In fact, the more people who are piled up on those grates, the warmer everyone will be.

21. More angry than mad.
Look, the number of people wanting to rub up against Obama - for the sake of their own egos - is pissing me off. All this pretense in a time when our country is sinking and people are starving and sickening to death is pissing me off.

And since the big thing about the inaugural is where you go to the bathroom, "pissing off" would be the one thing all those people have in common. If there was public urination and defecation at the inaugural, maybe, for one small moment, the rich and pompous might realize they have some common needs with the homeless and abused in this country. They sure aren't going to understand that from the bailout they'll get.

38. I mean going to the Inauguration is all ego.
A bunch of pretentious people going there to say "I was there." Spending money they will soon need for food and the cardboard box into which they will be forced to move. Making the awful, expensive and tasteless restaurants of DC rich. Jamming the city and probably causing more medical problems than at Woodstock and Altamonte combined. All for the sake of their damned egos.

15. UC Berkeley is showing the swearing in on 1/20/09 live on a giant screen
in the Sproul Plaza. The same place the students staged a protest in in the 1960s against the Viet Nam wa and the draft.

The Chancellor has given us all administrative leave if we want to go see the ceremony on the screen.

It think that's so cool! An entire university campus celebrates Obama's swearing in.

degrees either...all that body heat, will make it much warmer...and as for the spots to pee in DC....I figure at least 10,000 others will know where every one of those spots are...seems as though the best thing to do, would be to seriously limit intake of fluids...and maybe wear a depends, as nasty as that may seem, just in case of emergency...wb
