{1} In the first nine months, it appeared that George W. Bush’s would be a failed presidency. Then, on the morning of 9-11-01, a plane hit one of the Twin Towers in New York City, and our country changed.

(2} On May 1, 2003, George W. Bush was a passenger in a fighter jet that landed on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. Standing in front of a banner that read "Mission Accomplished," Bush announced the end of major combat missions in Iraq. The White House assumed that this would provide an image of strength, to be used in the 2004 campaign for re-election. They went so far as to hint Bush had co-piloted the jet, although he had (unlike his father) never had the training necessary for such a landing.

In Bush’s mind, he was the "War President." He believed the image would rank among the greatest in US history. It has, of course, become the image of one of the greatest failures in our nation’s history.

{3} On January 15, 2009, George W. Bush delivered his last prime-time televised address to the nation. His goal was to convince people that he had not been a pathetic failure. His speech was largely overshadowed, however, by the dramatic landing of a plane in the Hudson River near New York City.

The Bush administration has been a festival of hatred, death and destruction. Yesterday provided evidence that his era has indeed come to an end. Even the corporate media journalists who once supported him, now either ignore him, or note that he is simply out of touch with his failures. We have reason to celebrate: not only because Barack Obama is becoming President, but also because George W. Bush is being dismissed.

5. There was a time I was concerned that he would never leave

That he would stage some kind of terrorist stunt to impose martial law and extend his presidency. I wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't discussed by Bush and the criminals he surrounded himself with at one time when their approval rating was unnaturally high.

Thankfully, it's sounding crazy now. I only hope I remember the fear this admin generated in me to arrouse that kind of suspicion. Wish I had knew for certain that their crimes against this country would be fully exposed in a court of law and the proper punishments dealt out.

6. You Weren't Alone In That Fear

I saw it all over the place. Now it has morphed into another form, that the army is ready and waiting if there is civil unrest because of the economy. It's no surprise really given the insidiousness of fear and the way it burrows into the psyche. That was the very effect Rove and Company were seeking. They sought to control the country by that very negative. Also, it became clear very quickly that these vipers were willing to do anything to keep power and control. When you're dealing with people who have no compunction or moral core, it is not out of the realm of possibility to worry that they would do anything to stay in power.

Last night was a pathetic, whiny, pity party and fitting for the person who delivered that self-delusional wail. I was amazed, the other day, to read that Laura * took personally the things said about her husband on the campaign trail. I've never been able to figure out if these people need meds or are already on them.

11. Old friends...bookends...

I do think there is something prophetic, synchronistic, rather remarkable, in the bookending of the Tale of the Airplanes; the symbolism just can't be ignored. Someone more skilled than I can articulate it better than I, but as a simple observer, it's the tragic story with an even more tragic outcome of the best of the modern world's technology outwitted by the simplest of weapons and the most virulent of dogmatism, resulting in the death of innocents - immediately and longterm; bookended with what some consider a modern-day miracle, but, at the very least, is an epic act of skill and mastery - the safe landing of a jetliner on a major urban river, with no loss of life, and the community response in saving those souls. I would think, for New Yorkers, especially, it is a stunning pair of events, a harbinger, one would hope, of the end of an era of loss and depravity, and evolution into a more full realization of our humanity.

Ominous, let's hope, in the best of ways!
