She said these were the "golden tickets". But she didn't realize which she had gotten till today! She has had to rush around and get a dress and "buy" a tux for hubby. All the rentals were gone. She is so excited! And I am soo happy for her. Told her to take lots of pix.Turns out she "could" have snagged me tix too but they weren't cheap and then, there would be airfare. Sigh. I have always wanted to go to an Inaugural Ball but I am too broke. But I love a good party!

13. Yeah! The WP usually has those 'guides to attending the balls' that are really funny.
1) Take public transit or cab. It's funny to see all the folks in black tie on metro.
2) Women, don't buy new shoes. No one will see them. Wear flats.
3) If possible, avoid a large coat.
4) Avoid carrying a purse, if possible.

And wait for phone video updates. I am trying to have several of my friends who are going to get together and meet and that will be my way of "sharing" the experience!

3. Maybe there's a party in your area?

I'm going to a party with a bunch of the local campaign volunteers on Tuesday evening... not quite a formal dress ball, but it will suffice.

5. Here are the links to the Inaugural Balls. Best entertainment, by far, will be at Neighborhood Ball
Edited on Fri Jan-16-09 03:02 PM by flpoljunkie
The Neighborhood Ball is the ticket the winners of the lotteries and essay contest received. Quite a few of the tickets also went to D.C. residents. Am not sure how they were otherwise distributed. Likewise, the best talent will also be at the free concert at the Lincoln Memorial on Sunday. This is great, and I commmend our President-Elect.

9. The balls are nearly universally miserable events. Horribly over-sold, etc.
If you're going to go to one, once, this would be The One.

I just was posting about how happy I am that my friend is going to the Ball. I would have loved to go with her. We would have had a blast! All I said was I was too broke. I would have had to factor airline tickets into the equation, while she lives in the area. I can't afford that. How is that dismissive of Obama?

17. It's the "Biden" Ball that poster is "excited" about.
The subtlety is new, but for those who have read poster's post year after year, the missive is still there.

24. we are not worthy
Edited on Sat Jan-17-09 05:06 AM by Two Americas
You are hyper-alert to any hint of disloyalty to Obama. Few measure up, and you aggressively and relentlessly monitor and police this.

You have complained that people are negative, and never say anything positive, and then when someone does it is still not good enough for you and we get more bile and hostility.

Do you have any sense of what it would do to the success of the new administration were you to succeed, and were all of us to take the attitude and approach that you do? It would destroy any chance of success if everyone got in line the way you demand that they do and behaved the way that you do.

You have defended Obama reaching across the aisle, and including all. But you include hardly anyone, and want to toss people for the tiniest of heresies from the one true doctrine, from your idea of what proper hero worship of the PE should be. Warren is OK but saracat is the enemy?

If I were Obama, and read your posts, I would instruct my staff to make sure you never got close to me, and that you were never in a position to represent me to the public.

You have decided that you, and only you, know the proper way to support and be loyal to Obama. This is no longer "support" or "loyalty" you are expressing. It is something else altogether, and I think it is very destructive.

26. Not at call. Older and wiser and waaay beyond the primaries.
Now is when people need to start doing all the work they promised during the elections and work together to hold the politicians feet to the fire to make sure we move forward. There is never a better chance than at the beginning of an administration. If one waits too long, the opportunity will be gone and we revert to "politics as usual".

27. strange sort of projection there
Edited on Sat Jan-17-09 03:11 PM by Two Americas
You could carry this grudge forever, I guess. Anyone who supported a different candidate in the primaries, anyone who has failed to show the proper hero worship and adulation and mindless partisanship, can be resented and seen as the enemy indefinitely.

I am trying to imagine what sort of pleasure someone would get to post a picture of sour grapes and think they had done something clever or admirable.

No one who truly supported Obama, who had confidence in Obama and in themselves would ever do that.

Let's say that your insinuations are correct, that you have accurately detected some heresy here to the one true doctrine, that the OP has some evil agenda. Were that true, then you just walked right into the trap. That isn't very smart.

I think it is clear that we have not been getting the truth from some of those who have postured as the "real" supporters of the party and the party's candidate, who have bashed and smashed their way around here maligning and intimidating people. This has nothing whatsoever to do with supporting Obama nor the party. It is not about that, it is about some emotional need to sidle up to power, to vicariously feel like a winner, and then to do the exact same thing the Republicans and their most fanatic supporters did to us for years - gloat and sneer, and bully and humiliate people.

It is no sort of win, no victory, when it does so little for those claiming the win, when it turns them so ugly, so narrow minded, so self-centered.

You undermine and sabotage your own credibility, and you betray a lack of confidence in and support for the new administration, and you spread a poisonous and destructive message when you do things like this.
