The husband is a hard right winger, the only one in the neighborhood. The wife is a sweet person who you could tell was going along to get along.

All this pro Bush, "security", pro McCain, blah blah and now ? this?

We're still good friends, they are great neighbors, but so many times in the last 9 years we have had to walk away and agree to disagree.

So I find it incredibly heartening that they welcome our new day. Still, it is strange. They are the only ones hosting an innauguration party in the neighborhood, and they are the only Repubs.

4. The man is eminently likable. Even the Fox news broadcasters were saying so on election night.
Have fun at the party!

6. Don't think so,
but they would feel pretty stupid if they did, since all friends and neighbors are huge fans.

8. Well, you answered your own question there
they just want to be on the "winning side" and want to be part of the group, hence the turn around.

I'm not neccesarily putting them down, just saying that a lot of people aren't that educated/informed on issues and they just whichever way the wind blows.

I'm sure you'll find in 2012, they will vote for Obama.

And if you went back in time, probably everyone they hung out with, etc. voted for Bush. So they thought they were Republicans. Now, they'll start to think differently...

9. Nice post. I think the husband is softening since he's not vetoing the party...
It is very nice of them to do this. I think it's quite an olive-branch. You should help and ecourage others in the neighborhood to attend if you can.

10. I am seeing more Obama bumper stickers here in Red Tennessee....
.... than I saw during the campaign. Blows my mind .... I'll take it ... but it's blowing my mind.

12. I remember hearing someone say something about this phenomena a night or two after the election
that when people are polled about who they voted for in the 2008 presidential election, the numbers for Obama are bound to go up 10% or so, as some voters want to be part of the popular/positive/cool administration.

Guess folks in TN might be hopping on.... you did just accomplish that very cool "coup d'etat" in your state legislature this week, right?

16. Same thing in freepy WV.
Except the Beckley area (southern WV). Beckley was staunchly pro-Obama even in the primaries.

15. Something I've noticed about my Republican friends is that while they
voted for McCain in the GE, they don't seem to be disappointed that Obama won. It's as though they couldn't bring themselves to abandon the Republican party, but they think that an Obama Presidency will be good for the country.

17. Accept it for what you hope it is, be gracious. Be welcoming. Be our best face.
Can't hurt to try. Hopefully the story you've relayed to us here is playing out in thousands upon thousands of homes and neighborhoods across America. My uber RW, unintentionally but nevertheless racist MIL came around and actually VOTED for Obama.

Miracles happen.
