AP: Beyonce to Sing Etta James's 'At Last' for First Dance
Edited on Fri Jan-16-09 05:30 PM by flpoljunkie
I could not think of a better choice.
Beyonce to Sing Etta James's 'At Last' for First Dance

This bulletin just in from the Associated Press about Beyonce, who we told you will sing for the Obamas' First Dance at the Neighborhood Ball Tuesday night.

Beyonce has revealed the song she plans to serenade the Obamas with in their first dance as first couple ... She’ll sing the Etta James classic “At Last.”

Beyonce portrayed the blues great in the recent film “Cadillac Records” and sings the song in that movie.

Beyonce, who recently had a No. 1 hit with her song “Single Ladies,” will sing at the official Neighborhood Ball Tuesday night.

The singer-actress said singing for the Obamas’ first dance is a dream come true.

I don't care for Beyonce.

10. Oh, my....
I'd much rather see Etta up there singing her own song than Beyonce and her sexy self who thinks she's a sexy self as opposed to Etta who everone knows is a sexy self. But, well, Beyonce is young, Beyonce is sexy, Beyonce is hot. What more can you say? Well, Etta is old, but Etta is sexier, and Etta is hotter. And can belt a tune far better than Beyonce. Particularly her own tune.

Maybe there's a jazz festival somewhere on Tuesday and Etta was already booked?

Etta is one of those things in life everyone should experience at least once. Twice is better. Every chance you get even better than better.

35. And...
Her new album "From the Heart" is being released on Tuesday. Perhaps her way of letting everyone know she is still around?

A lot of people may or may not realize but she "integrated" the Billboard Pop Chart in 1961. Which was not an easy thing to do.

I'm beginning to wonder finally about Barack Obama...

5. I think it works on two levels...
Obviously, the historic nature of Obama's presidency. At last, indeed. But also the fact that they were both career-oriented and fell in love near their 30's. They didn't meet each other at a young age. I think the lyrics in the song are pretty appropriate for the two of them, given that they didn't meet each other until their late 20's.

12. Certainly, she is the original.....
and as Bionce states in her tribute to Etta, I couldn't have gotten to where I got to without singers like Etta James.

I see what Obama is doing as a Generational Bridge......older music sang by the next generation.

20. The Neighborhood Ball, the smallest, has 'become the hot ticket.'
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/inauguration-watch/2009/01/42000_expected_at_convention_c.html

Once inside, people must stick to their assigned ballroom. But the attendance won't be divided evenly between the six huge ballrooms. Not even close. Here's the breakdown:

Neighborhood Ball -- This has become the hot ticket and it is also the most intimate ball, with a crowd of 3,500 expected, officials said. It will be held in Ballroom D. The ball has an A-list of musical talent, including Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Faith Hill, JAY-Z, Alicia Keys, Shakira and Stevie Wonder. Nick Cannon will DJ the event. It will be hosted by Barack Obama, who reportedly will have Beyonce sing for his first dance with wife Michelle. ABC will televise the event from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Biden Home States Ball -- The ball hosted by Vice President-elect Joe Biden of Delaware will have the second-smallest crowd at 3,950 in the Grand Ballroom. Music by Maroon 5 and the James Gerard Orchestra.

Obama Home States Ball -- The ball for Illinois and Hawaii wil have 5,650 people in Ballroom E. Music by Common, Jack Johnson and Don Cagen Orchestra.

Midwest Ball -- This event has an expected crowd of 6,150 in Ballroom C, with music by Sheryl Crow and the Fabulous Motown Revue.

Mid-Atlantic Ball -- Held in Ballroom A, this event is the one that most Washingtonians might have scored tickets to and has an expected crowd of 7,160. Music by The Dead and DJ Cassidy.

Western Ball -- The mother of them all, this will be held in the cavernous Ballroom B with at crowd of -- drumroll, please -- 11,100. We hope Marc Anthony and Party on the Moon have strong amplifiers to reach a crowd that large.

Though it is not at the Convention Center, we're also told that the Southern Ball, at the D.C. Armory, will have about 10,000 people. Derek Trucks Band with Susan Tedeschi and the Wil Gravatt Band will perform.

No word on the crowd sizes for the other three official balls Eastern Ball at Union Station, the Youth Ball at the Washington Hilton or the Commander-in-Chief's Ball at National Building Museum, 401 F St. NW.

Beyonce is a second-rate talent who cares more about her image than anything else, including the quality of her music or any political cause. Of COURSE she would get on Obama's coattails.

33. I'd always disliked her until
I saw her earlier this month singing for Streisand at Kennedy Center Honors. And she sang "The Way We Were." To Streisand. And really...it was just excellent. Not as good as Barbra, to be sure, but only two or three are.

I find this just shameful.

Beyonce has been pimping herself out for a spot for over a month now and she got it. Now she is in the headlines for singing a song that was suppose to be secret.

She is such a manipulator, I wonder if Jennifer Hudson is going to be there and beyonce is trying to steal her thunder. Something doesn't smell right!
