AAAARRRGHHH! I've been trying for 3 days to figure out how to
tape on my VCR/DVD combo via a satellite receiver and I can't get it to work. The satellite receiver knows the VCR/DVD combo is there but I can't get it to tape more than a gray screen with a faint picture and really muted sound. The teevee is one with specific channels for video equipment. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

2. Because I'd like to tape the events of the Inauguration.

3. But you didn't mention that. Did you try:
satellite receiver-->vcr/dvd combo-->tv (this is the most simple way to do it).

That's how I used to do it. My satellite receiver even had multiple output so I ran one to my dvd recorder and another one to the tv.

4. Physically it is set up that way, but I think the problem has something
to do with the normal "home" setting of channels 3/4 vs. the specific video channels. I don't know. I'm just really frustrated with this right now.

5. If your satellite receiver is going to your vcr combo,
then that will record whatever station is on your receiver. Try recording a bit on a videotape and then play it in another machine and tv because if it plays then your problem is between the combo and your tv. My philosophy with these things is to try and be logical and start with the most simple thing first.

6. Check the back of the vcr/dvd to see if there is a switch b/t channels 3 and 4.

7. I did it! I did it!!!!
The problem wasn't in the physical hookup, but that the channel 3 had to be selected on the VCR using the remote.

Whew! Now I can tape like crazy!

Yeah!
