People Get Ready, there's a Train a Coming! (For the Sentimental only)
Please hit this link to play in the background!
(and thanks to all whose photos I "lifted". They are appreciated!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6j8WfHBZmPg&NR=1

People get ready, there's a train comin'
You don't need no baggage, you just get on board
All you need is faith to hear the diesels hummin'
You don't need no ticket you just thank the voters

People get ready, there's a train to Washington
Picking up passengers coast to coast
Faith is the key, open the doors and board them
There's hope for all among those loved the most
There ain't no room for the hopeless sinner whom would hurt all mankind
Just to save his own
Have pity on those whose chances grow thinner
For there is no hiding place against the kingdoms throne

People get ready there's a train comin'
You don't need no baggage, just get on board
All you need is faith to hear the diesels hummin'
You don't need no ticket, you just thank the Voters.

24. I absolutely LOVE the late, great Eva
I have that CD (a masterpiece) as well as several others.

I did not learn about her until Nightline observed the one year anniversary of her death. When I heard "Over the Rainbow" I knew I had to find a CD of hers. The only place (at that time) that had them for sale was used CD stores. I visited the one in College Park where UMD students trade their CD's and picked up two. Now I have almost all of them.

What a performer. What a talent. What a tragedy she died so young before most Americans could become familiar with her work.

And what was truly mind boggling was that she lived and recorded in Bowie, Maryland just a few miles down the road from me. She worked in landscaping and held a job at Benke's. The woman left a treasure load of music many of us can enjoy the rest of our lives.

32. with apologies for going off-thread
FrenchieCat, you have hit upon my musical soft spot:

Fields of Gold:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3YVil3Ajjs&feature=related

I heard a couple of years ago an Eva Cassidy movie (life story) was in the works. I keep waiting and waiting.... Think if Obama reads this thread, he might possibly put in a word about this to Hollywood?:)

If you have the chance, check out her work with Chuck Brown. You won't believe it.

38. Nightline is where I discovered her as well.
It was the most popular episode ever, and was rebroadcast several times. I had forgotten about her for a while, and recently was thinking about her, but couldn't come up with her name, just the details of her story... it was surprising to me to see her name here right when I was trying to remind myself of who she was.

Most times I prefer more rockin' tunes, but there is just something soothing and mesmerizing about her voice....

39. OH, look what I saw on wikipedia.....
Possibility of future film

In late 2007, AIR Productions acquired the rights to produce a film based on Cassidy's life.<42> It is being produced by Amy Redford (daughter of Robert Redford), Irwin Shapiro and Rick Singer.<43> In an interview a year earlier, Cassidy's parents suggested Kirsten Dunst or Emily Watson as possible actresses who could play their daughter.<44>

68. She went to my high school, my late brother called her his guardian angel ...
He felt a special bond with her. He and Eva graduated a year apart. She had cancer, which she endured with dignity and courage. My brother heard her sing when she was sick (it was probably her final appearance at The Bayou). When my brother was sick with lymphoma, he referred to her as his guardian angel.

Shortly before he passed away, a friend of his had a dream in which he and a woman were singing together in heaven. My brother sang in a blues band. The strange thing is, his friend had not heard of Eva, but I had a feeling it was her. I told his friend of Eva, and when I played a song by Eva over the phone, his friend said that was her, Eva was in the dream. My brother passed away about a year and a half after Eva.

After he passed away, my parents met with Eva's parents.

Tipper Gore heard my brother's band at a charity concert and picked them to play as a warm up band in an inaugural ball for Clinton and Gore. That was a great honor.

I love Eva Cassidy and love her music. What a beautiful voice, so full of soul.

13. Thank you, FrenchieCat - and a big hug to you!
The doomsayers here have already predicted the worst for everything from the platform he'll stand on to take the oath to his economic plan (too big) to his economic plan (not big enough) to his economic plan (why isn't it all fixed yet, fercryinoutloud!). It has gotten so freaking tiresome that I was going to stop coming for a while. Then someone sent me a link to your post and I feel all the joy come flooding back.

  :fistbump:   :fistbump:   :fistbump:   :fistbump:   :fistbump:

This man is not perfect - he'd be the first one to say so - and there are a few issues very important to me that he's already disappointed me on. But there's something good and right true about this man. And there's something good and right and true about us in that we elected him.

Thanks again, FC! Now I have to find another damned box of Kleenex. Something tells me I'll need at least a case of the stuff on Tuesday!

Hubby grew up in CA (Palo Alto)and we've lived in MO and NE. He will not put on gloves, a scarf, a warm coat, or a hat without urging.

36. Frenchie, thank you so much for this post, the pictures and the link
to the song by Curtis Mayfield, love me some Mr. Mayfield.

I was looking at the clips on MSNBC today, I was stunned to see so many people out in the cold waiting for a wave from the PE Elect and the VP Elect as the train slowed down before the Baltimore stop.

Then I saw David Shuster talking to the crowd in Washington and one guy said he was from Africa and at Union Station, one guy said he was from Trinidad. There are so many people from all over the world who want to be at this historic event.

I am speechless, happy and excited and the tears came when Chris Matthews said he predicted since 2004 that PE Elect Obama is President material. Am not saying this part correctly but I hope you understand.

I was planning to be there but my aunt, who is a supporter of Obama, lives in NY and she was not planning on going. Union Station looks awesome, I will visit DC sometime soon.

Happy and excited and cannot wait for Tuesday. I took the day off.

65. Thanks for sharing this Frenchie. Before this is all over, I'm gonna be
seriously dehydrated. I've listened to all the various versions provided in this thread, and I'm just a big old blubbering mess. I think this is the reason that most of us stick around, for posts like this.

:hi:

:hi: Amazing you've found one song that describes the past 8 years and our brand new future at the same time.

74. thanks Babylon Sister - the world will heave a collective sigh
I haven't posted much in the Presidential GE since the primary, putting up the
Obama Daily News took alot of my time and energy. (several hours each day).

Its a huge relief to many of us to have a sane, intelligent, leader as President
of the US.

We and the world have suffered too long from a corrupt regime.

Obama has assembled a very strong team, everything won't be perfect, but it
will be great.

I think the entire world will heave a collective sigh on Inauguration Day.

75. the NM state limbaugh radio station played 'soul train' during the
reading of the event on the sunday morning radio news.

from that station it's pure racism. it's the same station that filled the state with limbaugh's pronouncement that "obamas head needs to roll" sept 10, 2008
