I can't help thinking of RFK's last train ride.
Then crowds of mourners demonstrated their palpable connection to Bobby by thronging the rails in tears and sorrow to say good bye. Today thousands with unrestrained joy braved the frigid temperatures to demonstrate their connection to Barack and to say Godspeed. Bobby's death robbed me and so many others of the conviction that America could live up to its ideals.Barack has restored that hope that so many of us had lost. Any doubt about that has been given the lie by the outpouring of human spirit on display all along the Amtrak route today. Yes we can. Yes we will!!!

2. I'm glad I wasn't the only person thinking about this today
I kept being reminded of it as well. It's wonderful to see so many people out there celebrating today. The same outpouring of emotion, just full of Hope this time.

9. I was too
The contrast between the two really got me choked up for lots of reasons...

3. I thought of that too! Also the great "Eleanor and Franklin" TV series included the
scenes of that trip from Warm Springs, GA to Washington, D.C. when Eleanor took Franklin's coffin to lay in the Capitol Rotunda in state.

If you haven't seen that series (I have it on VCR) I hope you can get it on DVD. It is wonderful...

7. Eleanor was so angry that Roosevelt had died with Lucy Mercer.
But on the ride home, in that train, when she saw the thousands of Americans line the railways, she realized just how great of man he was.

It helped her forgive what he promised her he'd never do again.

11.  I have seen the series and agree with you.
I can remember watching documentaries about FDR with my folks.I can still see the stricken looks of sadness on the faces of people as they tried to come to grips with his death. Liberal Democrats connect with people in ways that are real and strong. No wonder the plutocrats go to such lengths to vilify them.

4. That's what I thought of too. I also think of "its on to chicago and lets win there"
and how obama won and spoke in chicago!

also, i thought of rfk saying in 40 years we'd have a negro president.

5. I was thinking the exact same.

A few months back they were showing photos of people who watched the train that carried RFK's body on CNN. What a contrast from that day from today.

14.  I gave serious thought to leaving the country for good after
the RFK assassination. I am pleased that I stayed long enough to see his prediction come true and his spirit reanimated.

8. Thanks Irish. It still rips my heart out. But even with the sadness
it evokes, that ride demonstrates what one person can do to stir emotions and instill confidence that we can be the people we like to think we are.

13.  I saw him at KU the day after he announced. His speech
touched me so deeply. I wasn't there on but I watched the whole trip on TV. The connection that Bobby fostered wasn't just from us to him but also among those of us who loved and supported him. Thanks for being there. Thanks for sharing.
