"Poutrage" is a term bound to make people angry
Edited on Sun Jan-18-09 10:31 PM by CreekDog
And I can see why.

I'm in a celebratory mood

That said, I kind of cringe at the thought that people who are not feeling celebratory because of Prop. 8 and the juxtaposition of Rick Warren in light of that could have their feelings called "Poutrage".

Maybe this is one of those terms we should wave bye-bye to.

I mean I get into the scrum too, but i think many people are upset regarding Prop. 8 and that kind of outrage should not be reduced to "poutrage".

(on edit: i should clarify that i'm upset with the passage of Prop. 8 as well. it did put a damper on the election results and my celebration)

3. "Poutrage" was a good coinage when it first came out...and when applied to things like
"Obama sucks because he wears pleat-front pants instead of flat-front pants" or "Unless Obama announces that he will ship off Bush and Cheney to The Hague during his inaugural address, he's a traitor to democracy," it has some validity.

Problem is, since then, way too much of the time it's applied to genuine and legitimate anger, sadness, or even disagreement.

5. I am also in a celebratory mood....

Would you like to dance with me?

6. I thought we were using the term to refer to the FREEPERS
seems very fitting in that context....

8. I think it's gone beyond that
I'll mock people who give Obama a hard time over nothing, but some things are not nothing.

11. Yay! It's really not a word that should be used against
fellow Dems no matter what the issue is. I'm sure that there must be
kinder ways of dealing with our own then mocking them.

12. at least arguing forthrightly with them doesn't minimize the other's feelings
not the way "poutrage" does.

that kind of has an air of, "that thing you're upset about, it's nothing...get over it"

that said, i think it's perfectly fine to argue with people about why there's cause for celebration.

The term is meant to minimize and marginalize.

21. I see the term "poutrage" applying to a different kind of "outrage".
Edited on Mon Jan-19-09 01:02 AM by backscatter712
Think of what the freepers' reaction to reports of Obama not watching Bush's farewell speech, or any one of a thousand other perceived snubs againsts Republicans.

They're all bullshit, and make mountains out of molehills, and what they all have in common is that the outrage and pouting itself is fake. They're not really mad because Obama didn't watch Bush's speech, they're just using it as an excuse to bully.

That said, the GLBT's reaction to Rev. Warren is not this kind of fake poutrage - it's real anger, directed at real slights from Rev. Warren, and damned well should not be delegitimized.

25. "Poutrage" is also wonderfully metaphorically accurate
I think it applies whenever anyone thinks the following is a logical form of argument:
