HBO is a major homophobic media outlet.
Edited on Sun Jan-18-09 11:06 PM by cliffordu

Besides the fact that through Showtime, they developed the character of David Fisher on Six Feet Under as a loving, three dimensional man who happened to be gay.

I still think it sucks that I couldn't hear Robinson's invocation for whatever reason.

Maybe they've changed their minds since this morning, when they omitted the Robinson invocation and tonight when they showed 'The L word'.....Cause it's on now.

On Edit:

Obviously forgot the sarcasm tag..

1.)Stirring shit.
I see you edited out all that "poutrage" crap from your OP.

2.)You're also batting around a big gay straw man.
I dont think most of the people here at DU who are angry about Robinson's being omited from the concert broadcast are angry at the network which produced the concert. Do you? Really?
I think you seized upon a fairly atypical post in another thread (which you do not link to), and present it here as some kind of huge source of...how did you put it earlier?... "poutrage".

3.)Your OP is pure sarcastic belittling flamebait.

IIRC he was the first character on TV portrayed as a regular person who happened to be gay. You know, like real life.

There was, however, an outcry because the actor playing the role was straight.

First, HBO and Cinemax are owned by the same people, not showtime. Second, HBO didn't leave Robinson out, the committee did by scheduling him at 2:20 and not saying in any of their publicity that they did so. It isn't HBO's fault Robinson wasn't on the air it is Obama's inagural committee's fault.

74. Some folks, who don't really read the OPs overreact....I should have
been clearer about what a stellar record HBO has on GLBT characters.

Or used the sarcasm tag.

And besides, I'm a deadbeat.

71. I would really like to help you out on this thread but

it really is fucked up beyond all possible understanding.

If you were trying to say that its not HBO's fault then I agree.

If YOU don't get my humor, I'll have to go back to rehab.

:hi:

I wasn't very clear. Sorry. Wrong about HBO and showtime being the same outfit, too.

80. I also don't think HBO did this...
HBO is not a homophobic company. But they don't own Showtime nor make the L Word 'through' them. Or any of that. Facts are facts. And satire without tight facts is a failure. Satire on the internet is difficult anyway.
The planners of the stage show placed Robinson ahead of the live feed portion of the show, effectively removing him from the line up for most of America. I assume it was the same crowd who has done similar things in the past.

83. Third time on two threads you've needed to rant on the showtime thingy.
you ought to get a fucking life.

And on another line you stated that HBO was only semi-freindly to the GLBT community.... (paraphrased).

So in case you missed it AGAIN:

HBO brought you

Angels in America,
6 feet under,
"If These Walls Could Talk.",
Rosies' boat thingy,
Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt,
The Laramie Project,
The Middle Sexes,
"Normal"
So, yeah. I guess HBO is semi-gay friendly.

87. Well you and I are speaking on very different levels
I know all about HBO. All the facts, and the street address. You do not have the facts, but that does not stop you from making declarations. Showtime is far more gay friendly in terms of content and in terms of openess in company. Some people in power at HBO have not been the keenest people toward gays or women. A nuance that might be lost on a person who thinks they are the same company.
Once you get so much incorrect, trying to play teacher is not a wise move. I'm in showbiz. This is my life. What's yours? Certainly no meetings at Showtime or HBO, that much we know!

73. You've been spouting this false made up stuff
all over the place. It is not accurate in any way. Any conclusions drawn from it would be moot. this 'through Showtime' line you repeat is delusional. Ford produces the Civic 'through Honda' as well I guess, in your world of improvisational truth?
This lack of caring for honest discourse is a mark of character.

92. I'm not talking about the content
Im talking about the company. 'HBO' as a company. Not what they air, who they are. Shop talk when I should be talking about how great Bruce sounded or something. It was great to see Stevie and others up there. The show was nice over all.
And I'd like to note, that I do not blame HBO for the lack of Robinson, never said I did. Just said that they have been semi-friendly. Showtime has been really friendly. I stand by that. HBO does some great things, and I expect more gret things from them in the future. They do strive for excellence and inclusion. Showtime has a wilder risk factor and will develop rather than merely harvest GLBT oriented product. To me there is a difference in how the two companies do business in terms of this specific issue. I like one better than the other in the office, the other on the screen.
The live stage people made today's mistake. Not HBO. HBO likes money, likes getting good material.
