Forget inaugural bashes -- some Republicans are skipping town
They're leaving the partying to the Democrats. Those who plan to stay say they will be there to observe history.

By Jill Zuckman and Richard Simon
January 19, 2009

Reporting from Washington -- Half a dozen Republicans decamped from Washington to Southern California this weekend to get away from the crowds, the cold and the Barack Obama bobbleheads. They've rented a house in Palm Springs with a heated swimming pool, a hot tub and an outdoor fire pit.

"We'll toast the new administration and, fingers crossed, wish them well before we return on Wednesday and see what the future holds for Republicans in Washington," said Karen Johnson, a lobbyist and former Bush administration official who organized the long weekend.

Many Democrats are approaching Obama's inauguration as the 44th president with unbridled excitement, but Republican spirits are considerably muted. They are bracing for the couple million Democratic partygoers expected to invade the capital, not to mention the loss of thousands of Republican jobs.

The switch from a Republican to a Democratic White House will put at least 8,000 members of the GOP out of work. The loss of Republican seats in the House and the Senate has added to the party's employment problem.

Maybe they can be outsourced; they've done enough of their usual wreckage here.

"The switch from a Republican to a Democratic White House will put at least 8,000 members of the GOP out of work. The loss of Republican seats in the House and the Senate has added to the party's employment problem."

Hey, fair and balanced, you guys! Now YOU get a taste of what YOUR guy and YOUR sycophants and YOUR greedy pirates and schmucks and all their other pointy-headed CONservative CON-jobber friends and think-tankers and American Enterprise Institute weasels set in motion. YOUR ideas and agenda made this happen. Sweet poetic justice that YOU now get to reap the fruits of those labors. How does that bitter reality taste, now that it's bounced back on you?

Eight thousand GOPers out of work? Maybe some of them will start learning a little bit about compassion now. They'll have a chance to see how the other half struggled to survive while crushed by the results of GOP policies and "leadership." Maybe some of them will come out of this seeing why we HAVE TO be our brothers' keepers, why Jesus loved the poor the best, why we HAVE TO take care of one another and be ALWAYS mindful of the common good. Without being slammed at "socialists" and "communists."

I apologize. I should be more compassionate myself. But toward these people I'm having a hard time finding it at the moment. Sometimes maybe a taste of their own medicine is the BEST medicine. I hope they have awhile to sit on the sidelines and lick their wounds and think, and think HARD, about what they've caused and what they've done, and how - YES - it HURTS. They get to see that and taste it up close and personal, and know what it's like and walk in the other guy's shoes and see how damned miserable it is. Maybe they'll get a chance to see what it means and how it feels. MAYBE it will redeem some of them, and change their hearts and minds.

MAYBE.
