The Anger at Obama over Robinson and Warren shows that we've actually moved forward
full civil rights for GLBT folks. Twelve years ago, there was no suggestion of inclusiong for the GLBT community from Clinton at his inauguration or in his speeches or policies. And most dems and the GLBT community did not, by and large, make an issue of it. The discussion, anger and disappointed not only in the GLBT community but in the larger dem community, over President Obama's position on GLBT rights, reflects a greater acceptance over the importance of ensuring those rights. And that's a good thing.

1. Agreed...
Hopefully he stops triangulating once he takes office. There was a time when he firmly stood up for civil rights. He strongly supported gay marriage around a decade ago when he campaigned for the Illinois legislature. But as he has risen in national politics, he's triangulated a bunch on this issue. I hope he uses the political capital he has with the American people and moves back to the left where I believe his heart truly is on this issue. First stop is ending Don't Ask, Don't Tell. But he's got to do more than that.

2. I see it as triangulating as well, and it's not a position that's admirable
He needs to fulfill the promises he made to the GLBT community.

4. Of course it's not admirable...
It's the same dishonest politicking that goes on with every other issue. The problem for him on this is that many of us who support him view it as civil rights. That's not something you waffle on. It's something you stand up and fight for.

3. Clinton did include GLBT marching band

in '93 and '95 and it did get attention... positive in the gay press and communities, negative among the fundies. Also, he made a campaign promise to lift the ban on gays in the military and came up with the idiotic DADT for which, believe you me, he received a lot of criticism with the gay and civil rights activists communities.

6. Absolutely
And that's one of the most frustrating things about it.
