I'm less worried about Obama than I am about people in the crowd. I can easily see some nutcase with a smuggled gun taking shooting into the crowd.

Maybe I'm being too much of a worrier, but I won't fully relax until it's all over.

1. Anybody who does that will be immediately killed
Either by law enforcement (many of whom are masked in the crowd) or by the other spectators.

3. What I don't get is this constant
worrying that someone will do something like that.

There have been posts like this one over and over here on DU, starting quite a ways back in the campaign. What's with you guys?

Keep in mind that those close enough to "do anything" will have passed through metal detectors, and anyone else, if that person pulls out a weapon, will be wrestled to the ground so quickly that nothing will happen.

4. Try not to think about it Cali. This weekend was the first time
safety issues started really bugging me. I think they have it under control. I would hate for anything to happen so I have to push my thoughts in a different direction.

It hit me again for a moment looking at Dr. King's speech on CNN. It's a different world now and if a hair on Obama's head is touched we'll have problems like we've never seen before. He'll be safe. I'm just not going to think otherwise.

12. You do realize that some of us witnessed three assasinations in four years
Edited on Mon Jan-19-09 06:25 PM by sfexpat2000
when we were like 5.

I saw a lady on one of the King docs today who said when she was a kid, she didn't know that our leaders died from natural causes.

ETA: Maybe that was five years. It sort of doesn't matter. It was just SOP.

16. I try not to assume anything but you know
for some of us who were just old enough to know what was happening, it's pretty hard to see any beloved figure out there in huge crowds without feeling anxious.

It's not about spoiling the party, it's just there.

14. I can certainly
understand why, in the current social-political-economic atmosphere, reasonable people can have concerns about this type of thing. But I am confident that the agencies that are in charge of insuring safety have things covered on Tuesday in Washington. In 24 hours, most of us will agree that we have witnessed a wonderful and historic day.
