Day of Service: DU'ers post your service here...

Obama has called upon us to help each other. I think it is the best part of his inauguration celebration. How are you participating?

My personal choice for helping is to reach out to family and friends whom need an extra hand, and put my energy with them. My action has been to help a friend's daughter in crisis and help arrange needed services and support plus be a follow up support person. It was wonderful to be able to help a friend, and know that my actions have helped stabilize a family and potentially avert a crisis.

6. homeless initiative
Our city/county/ is conducting a homeless count and initiative. I volunteered to take food/clothing /bedding to homeless people and to encourage the use of shelters and systems to get them off the streets.
There has been a limited number of volunteers, please considering helping out in your community.

7. I volunteered on the 3-7 am shift at the homeless shelter.
Of course, I do this the third Sunday night of every month, but it happens to be today.

My wife, son, and I went grocery shopping this weekend, except this time we had two carts. Everything (for the most part) that we bought for our family, we bought one for the food bank. My 3 year old son really enjoyed minding the "Extra" cart and even made a few suggestions on a some things we could get to help out.

It was a really great experience for all of us

While you may find that satisfying, you can't let your satisfaction deter you from the more important goal: effective public services for those in need. Unfortunately, that's what Obama's call to service will do. It will tend to make private assistance an alternative to public assistance. That will give too much power to the private actors who provide the assistance and will allow them to serve their own personal goals at the expense of the sick and the hungry.

11. Donating clothing to Share and Care
the designated place of service for today. If they are closed by the time I'm off work, I'll donate the clothing to the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store instead--money raised there goes to paying for hospital supplies and equipment, and the store raised $2M last year.
