Coolidge and Arthur took the oath twice as well.

6. David Shuster reported it just a few minutes ago, but they are now busy talking about Caroline
Kennedy withdrawing. I haven't heard any other details.

16. It's not surprising
We're in the middle of Mercury retrograde, which wreaks havoc with communication--even the oath of office, apparently. But Merc ret is also good for do-overs. :hi:

In yesterday wasn't optimal for new beginnings..it's complicated but suffice to say that today is much better and I think Robert's helped us out!

How freakin' Cosmically Ironic is that!

27. I found this interesting descriptive article of the latest Swear In..
Edited on Wed Jan-21-09 08:54 PM by zidzi
<snips>

"WASHINGTON — Chief Justice John G. Roberts was ushered into the Map Room of the White House on Wednesday night to re-administer the oath of office to President Barack Obama because the original oath on Tuesday had a word out of sequence.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said the move was made out of "an abundance of caution" in consultation with White House Counsel Greg Craig. Obama's second swearing-in, devoid of the pomp of the initial event, took place at 7:35 p.m. in the presence of a few aides and a press pool. The chief justice was wearing a court robe. "Are you ready to take the oath?" Roberts said. "I am," Obama said, "And we're going to do it very slowly."

It capped a packed first full day for the 44th president, and comes on the heels of Obama's expected signing of an executive order, as soon as Thursday, shuttering the terrorism detention facility at Guantanamo Bay.

Obama began the day by attending a prayer service at the Washington National Cathedral, a tradition for new presidents.

He also celebrated a political victory as his former presidential primary rival, Hillary Clinton, was confirmed by the Senate as secretary of state, with a vote of 94-2."

29. Isn't this the sort of thing that has happened before?
You'd think there might be an expert who could just tell us who's right on this. I watched the inauguration in a bar on both CNN and CBS - one said that after Biden took the oath that he was temporarily president, and the other said that Obama became president at noon whether he took the oath or not.

9. on which show? You must be on the east coast because that
hasn't been aired on the west - I've had them on all day. I do recall reading that experts said this was a reasonable thing to do if the story didn't go away.

From what I can tell, there is nothing in the Constitution that says the oath is invalid if it includes any verbal gaffes or missteps in any way, or textually different from the oath as written.

First of all, anyone taking the oath includes his or her name, and "So help me God" is not part of what's written in the Constitution, but it's usually included.

And the words (or affirm) are in parentheses, as an option to "swear" (I'm guessing).

So I don't think anyone can - legally and accurately take the oath of Presidency by using the words and only the words as written in the Constitution. No one could include their name, no one could mispronounce or choose "swear over affirm" or say so help me God".

This is so goofy to me... but if he did take the oath again, I'm glad so that the story just goes away.

12. Nope--WA State here. During MSNBC talking about Caroline, David Shuster
broke in and said that Obama retook the oath. He sort of laughed about it and then went on talking about Caroline.

At least I'll have a month to get used to the new names. If I forget later and act stupider than usual, remind me who you were, ok?

There's no pleasing these nuts.
