At that kind of event I'm not sure I could even remember my own name.

I wouldn't have had a problem with it. I mean if it was more important that Roberts get it right under all circumstances (by reading from a copy) than have people think he didn't trust his memory --which is worse?

Better safe than sorry if you ask me. And there is no shame in reading in that case.

3. Roberts had to show off by being the smartest guy on stage.
Maybe he was intimidated by Obama. He really should have brought notes.

8. I thought Cheney shredded them?
Can't imagine he would have left that around for someone else to find.

6. even a mere copy would have burned his fingers ...
he didn't want to take that chance ...

actually reading a true excerpt from the Constitution would have caused him to melt like the Nazi in the climax of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" ...

10. Absolutely, that is what he should have done. I think reading it straight from the Constitutiou
would have made it more powerful.

12. I would have preferred that it have been read exactly as it is written
Like many people, I have my pet theory on why he felt compelled to add the "so help me god" bit-

But that didn't make it less tawdry.

16. He should have read from a script.
Justice Stevens read off a paper for Biden's oath and it went perfectly.

17. Aw, why would a Supreme Court Chief Justice appointed by B**h

want anything to do with such a meaningless document?

He prefers trying to quote the Bobble instead. Being as that's the "law of the land" he swore to the Neocons to uphold (when politically expedient.)
