New details emerge about Caroline: Was expected to be chosen; 'personal reason' unrelated to Ted

Details on Caroline Kennedy's Withdrawl from Senate Contention
According to a knowledgeable Democratic source, Caroline Kennedy withdrew because of a personal matter that arose 48 hours before she fully expected to be chosen by New York Gov. Paterson. Without talking to her political advisers, Kennedy called Paterson and told her she had a personal issue that made her inclined to withdraw her name. He told her to take 24 hours to reconsider. She took that time on her own, and ultimately decided to stick with her original decision.

The source says the “personal matter” was wholly unrelated to Senator Edward Kennedy's health emergency at the inauguration, or Kennedy's health generally.

More On Kennedy from the NY Daily News

The paper reports Caroline Kennedy's decision to drop out of the race was unrelated to the health of her uncle, Sen. Ted Kennedy.

Kennedy aide: "It had nothing to do with Ted.”

Also says Paterson urged Kennedy to take 24 hours to think over her decision, which she did.

My Take: I think Patterson decided to pick her and she informed him that she was going to withdraw. I think he tried to talk her out of it and she decided to think more about it - which is the reason for the media confusion. I wonder what the personal issues are, I just hope her health is okay.

1. Or she was told that she would not be chosen
And this gives her a chance to bow out on her own.

Paterson really screwed this up. It was obvious he wasn't gonna pick her and gave her this face saving way out. I think President Obama is not a happy fellow to see his friend treated this way. I wouldn't be surprised if New York doesn't get the federal funds they request. Paterson's assing around has put New York squarely on Obama's shit list...even more so if he picks "shuck and jive" Cuomo.

14. Do you actually think that?
Do you actually think Obama is going to deny aid to the citizens of New York just because its governor may or may not have done something Obama didn't like? Where did you ever get the idea that Obama would be so spiteful and petty? What a ridiculous post.

15. I guess you don't think much of Obama, then. And "shuck and jive"
is frankly offensive...who are you quoting there?

2. I see it opposite: he told her he was not going to pick her and offered her a soft place to fall.
Paterson said he would choose someone who would be electable in two years, and Kennedy was not polling well.

6. Right-o. Given Patterson's insistance on focusing on the 2010 elections,
and given the more-they-see-her-less-they-like-her polling dynamic of CK (and her less-than-impressive public lobbying effort), Patterson decided that she was an unacceptable risk.

5. I see it otherwise.
Patterson told her it wasn't her, and offered an out. She took it. Someone leaked it out. Someone else in the CK camp denied it, not knowing of the arrangement. CK herself then went out and confirmed she dropped. Now everyone is acting like they wanted it to be her, to keep up the face-saving charade.

9. Snarky, speculative: maybe it had to do with her marriage, and rumored affair with the publisher of
the NY Times? Just asking.

17. Ha! And now that's what the Post is saying - her marriage figured into it.

12. The speculation is fodder for her detractors for one last kick to the bollocks.
