..."Don't get too caught up this," "Don't invest too much in this guy," "Don't set yourself up for disappointment."
I figured at worst he'd stop the rightwing drift and told myself, at best, he might give progressives a small ledge to stand on.
After 28 years of Reagans, Bushes, DLCist, centrists, corporatists and so on, I figured it was next to impossible for a president to get into office and actually have the spine to push for a progressive agenda. I assumed that he or she would be surrounded by hand-wringing advisers and insiders that would press for only the most incremental change and would suggest continuing a large portion of Bush's agenda "in order to look tough" and wrong assume it was what a supposed center-right nation wanted.
As I grew more and more inspired by this candidacy, I would keep telling myself I was going to feel embarrassed when it all blew up in my face.
I have never been more happy to be wrong. He's exceeded my expectations in two days in ways I could never have imagined.
Gitmo closing, Iraq war ending, peace mission to Israel-Palestine starting, public works and infrastructure investments being proposed, lobbyists cut off from the White house....it just keeps getting better.
To put it crudely - Holy shit! This guy's for real!
Now my only fear is that this is all a dream and that I'm going to wake up and see McCain and Palin on that stage.
