Poll: Obama Really Popular...In Two Deep-Red States

President Obama's isn't just coming into office with really highly popularity nationwide -- he's apparently coming into office with really high popularity in states he lost by landslides last November.

Here are his approval ratings in two deep-red states, from Rasmussen:

• Texas: Approve 62%, Disapprove 35%. This includes 41% strong approval, and 19% strong disapproval.

• Tennessee: Approve 60%, Disapprove 35%. This includes 39% strong approval, and 21% strong disapproval.

For reference, John McCain carried Texas by a 55%-44% margin, and won Tennessee by 57%-42%.

Admittedly that hasn't often happened with GOP politicians but I approve of Hoffman's performance in Doubt this year but would vote for Penn as best actor for his role in Milk.

31. I think in general the obstructionist stuff is going to bite the GOP

the time is not for that crap. Dissent and another opinion sure but if they get too clever here they could really be in a world of trouble.

They are retreated back into the bowels of GOP land figure out what to do and they DO have to do something to keep their people agitated but they need to be really careful here. IMHO.

5. I believe there is about 10% of the electorate

that actually weirdly supports whoever the President is, regardless of who they actually vote for. If things break right then Obama will win states like Texas, Kentucky, W. Virginia, and maybe a couple more in 2012 fueled by this weirdness in the electorate.

In 1820, James Monroe ran unopposed for his second term. One elector did not cast his vote for President Monroe so that George Washington would remain the only president to ever win the electoral college unanimously. That tradition would likely remain.

The McCain campaign smeared Obama as this uber, radical lefty and therefore many of these people had very low expectations of him. I think people are coming around to see that Obama is anything, but a scary radical.

20. Nobody knows what the election results were in TX or TN either.

I've contended for a long time that TX is pretty close to blue if it's not entirely blue IF THE VOTE IS COUNTED FAIRLY. TX has a whole bunch of voting machine companies (Diebold/Premier and Hart Intercivic e.g.) making huge profits and probably insuring that Cornyn and his ilk remain in office even tho their popularity is almost certainly not as large as indicated by the "alleged" vote results.

In TN I don't think this election the new laws about paper and auditing have taken effect yet, so IMO TN is still being tilted toward the Repubs by the programming of voting machines and other illegal dirty tricks of one kind or another. If the vote is counted fairly in TN as well, the Dems will prove to be a lot stronger than they are presently perceived to be. TN might also be blue.

Given the number of cities: Houston, Dallas/Ft. Worth, San Antonio, Austin... Cities usually vote dem, Latinos voted heavily dem... It does seem strange we didn't see a blue Texas when you look at it like that.

Only 12 in front of me when I got there at opening and I still had to wait an hour because the machine that spits out the access PINS (which is your "receipt") was not working. There were problems all over the state.

You have a lot of very conservative, not real well-informed people in TN, but I'm sure in some counties there is fraud.

Still, there were Obama parties all over the place on election night and lots of Obama stickers on cars here. We're not all wingnuts.
