Very similiar in appearance.

(by the way, for those wondering why I posted this, it's rumored she's going to be announced as Patterson's pick tomorrow.)

6. well, she's from a conservative district
which doesn't mean she'd be a conservative us senator. It just means she voted the way she voted in congress because she was representing a district, now she's representing a very liberal state.

I hope she's up to the challenge Peter King will throw at her.

11. i have no idea
maybe she felt shackled with having to support what her district supports. Now she won't have that burden.

But who knows. This is a very odd pick. I'm not saying it's horrible, but it's odd.

22. Speaking of Cuomo, I've yet to find anyone who views him negatively...
... it seems sort of unusual. Is he that good? I have a negative sense about him, but I still havent found the event that started this view... but I have to take the time to research it. I've been procrastinating. But perhaps I'm being unfair, so I have to do it.

10. As someone who has spent 95% of my life in New York State
Edited on Thu Jan-22-09 08:09 PM by sohndrsmith
I still don't really know what Upstate NY means. It seems to mean something different to anyone I have asked...

I've lived in Manhattan, Albany and several places in between (grew up in Dutchess County)... and I still don't get it.

Is the message that Upstate NY is conservative? Well, I lived a few miles from Tim Leary's haunt (and my dad went to one of his parties but did not provide details). So I wouldn't call NY north of NYC, (like Hyde Park - where I think Gillibrand's constituency is?) as conservative.

Or am I still too far south... so weird... it all seems to be a mix depending on the town you're in and (often) how close it is to a college or university.

20. Take Koch and Blommberg out of that equation
Ed Koch hasn't made Democratic noises since September 11th 2001, the date he looped the loop and basically joined the neo-Conservatives.

Michael Bloomberg is an oddity, a lifelong Democrat who bizarrely joined the GOP to run for Mayor of a city that is OVERWHELMINGLY Democratic voting.

Senator Schumer and SoS Clinton know exactly what party they're in....hint, it's the same party that President Obama is in.

I don't know why we couldn't have a special election within 6 months or something and then wait until 2012 (well, I know governor's appointment is what's in our state constitution, but having someone appointed and then campaigning for 4 years is nutty)

But from what I can gather, there's more that I can agree on with Rep. Gillbrand than stuff I can disagree with her on.

Everything is about reaching compromises, because it's absurd to expect everyone to agree with each other on 100% of the issues 100% of the time.

32. There is nothing wrong with Corporations, whats wrong is the way many have been run
Unfortunately many of them have had to learn the hard way, that running the show as a free-for-all has actually damaged them per se.

Obviously some things are going to have to change.

36. SOMETIMES the DLC does get things wrong, or goes a little bit too far
In hindsight next to no regulation has proven to be a mistake....however, I don't think the answer is now a stranglehold regulation....there needs to be some regulation but not overwhelming regulation.

No.
Putting my shoes on the wrong feet is a mistake.

Supporting a repeal of all regulation on Corporations is BAD POLICY....
and it has worked 100% as designed....the already RICH & POWERFUL were able to buy even more POWER from
the Republicans in Donkey Suits (DINO) of the DLC.

"There are forces within the Democratic Party who want us to sound like kinder, gentler Republicans. I want us to compete for that great mass of voters that want a party that will stand up for working Americans, family farmers, and people who haven't felt the benefits of the economic upturn."---Paul Wellstone

There are enough conservative votes upstate to offset the liberal NYC vote

42. This appointment is very temporary
No way will she be elected in the 2010 special election. She is truly just a place holder.

I am a NY'er, and, when I first heard this news, I couldn't believe that the absolutely worst pick was chosen. But, then, after some thought, I am thinking that Patterson grudgingly decided that he would, indeed, select a "place holder", despite his original statements to the contrary.

There is no way this woman will be actually elected here in NYS. Thank goodness.
