My message board argument with a FOX news Viewer over Cable News Ratings!
Edited on Thu Jan-22-09 09:40 PM by aaaaaa5a
I thought I would go insane!

Most people here know that Mediabistro.com posts the Cable News Ratings each day. Yesterday I checked the site to see the number of viewers each news organization had for the inauguration. There were several posters there trashing MSNBC because they finished last among the Cable News outlets.

For some unknown reason, I jumped into the fray to explain the facts regarding the TV ratings and FOX, CNN and MSNBC.

I still find it scary how often simple mathematical facts can be ignored by the fury of FOX news viewers

Here is a sample of one of my posts.

-----------------POST---------------------------------------

"MSNBC is last in viewers because it is not available in as many homes. Many cable companies do not carry MSNBC. On other cable outlets it is not in the basic tier. In large DMAs like Pittsburgh and Jacksonville, MSNBC is basically unavailable.

Comparing CNN/FOX to MSNBC isn't an apples to apples comparison. In reality, its a miracle MSNBC is even in the fight given how many fewer people have a chance to watch the channel.

I would love to see a ratings book in a DMA where all 3 news channels were equally available on the areas major cable outlets. I bet the results would be surprising."

-----------------END OF POST------------------------------------

If you would like to read the whole message board "debate" use this link. I think it's pretty interesting and informative.

3. I got into it with a Foxer at work.

Bragging about being on top of the news channels.

I said: So what? Spongebob has more viewers than Fox News. Your argument is silly. Having the most of barely anybody is still less than barely anybody.

Him: Well it's true. You Libbies just refuse to see the truth!

Me: It's just stupid. It's like saying "Fleets Enema is the BEST SELLING DOUCHE in America!" (in Don Pardo voice) How many people actually buy enemas on a weekly basis?

EDIT: I do a good Don Pardo

5. I always hit them with the fact that News Corp's controlling interest
is owned by Saudi Prince Al-Waleed Bin Tahal who once bragged in Dubai that he could change a crawl on Fox News within 30 minutes.

6. The best argument to throw at a Foxer: Why Wasn't Fox Able To Convince People To Vote McCain?
If their viewership is so good, how come the Republicans got ROUTED!?!

Watch them go into an infinite loop trying to figure it out.

7. I think FOX news preaches to the already converted

87% of FOX news viewers planned to vote for McCain. In 2004 88% of FOX news viewers voted for Bush. I think one reason why FOX has good TV ratings is because EVERYONE who calls themselves conservative watches the network. While the rest of the population is spread among the other news outlets.

At MSNBC, 63% of the viewership planned to vote for Obama. That number was about the same as the broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, NBC) viewership.

At CNN, 65% of the viewership planned to vote for Obama.

What's most interesting to me is that MSNBC is considered the "liberal network." Yet the voting behavior of its viewership is actually less progressive than CNN. And it is right in line with the broadcast networks. More Democrats watch CNN than MSNBC. More Independents watch MSNBC.

So the idea that MSNBC is "preaching to a progressive audience" when compared to other news outlets is actually untrue. It also shows that FOX news has a far more conservative slant, than MSNBC's perceived slant to the left. At least that's the case in the eyes of the viewers!

8. I just ban them on my site
It's bad enough out there with right owning the radio airwaves, I have no tolerance for them on my site. They are the minority now anyway.
