Pre-Inaugural shoe toss in D.C.

Posted on: Monday, 19 January 2009, 20:10 CST

Political protesters in Washington Monday got in some last licks at President George W. Bush, throwing shoes at an inflatable effigy of the outgoing president.

The 25-foot-tall Bush figure, decorated with a Mission Accomplished flight suit, was set up on Dupont Circle for what one participant called a cathartic opportunity to mimic the actions of Iraqi journalist Muntather Zaidi -- who has been under arrest since he threw two shoes at Bush during a Baghdad news conference in December -- the Los Angeles Times said.

Participants were able to grab ammunition from a pile of donated footwear and let loose on the inflatable Bush doll, the newspaper said.

This is totally cathartic, said Forbes Hill, an animator from Los Angeles. How can you resist?

Gael Murphy, a co-founder of the anti-war group Code Pink, told a crowd estimated at 100 that shoe throwing as a form of protest is not likely going away.

Hold onto your shoes, she said. The struggle is not over.

The demonstrators later marched to the White House and threw shoes over the fence. The Secret Service arrested a 30-year-old man on charges of disorderly conduct, NBC News reported.
