49. I was not crazy about the idea of Caroline Kennedy out of principle
But I would not have had a problem with her being appointed. This pick on the other hand, rubs me the wrong way. I don't know who the hell this Gillibrand woman is and the more I hear about her the more I dislike her. From what I'm hearing about her she's just as privileged as CK but her family isn't as famous. She reeks of a political opportunist. This is not what I want in a Senator.

Here's to a robust primary season. I look forward to seeing almost anyone run against her.

Paterson has just landed on my shit list too.

It would be interesting to see the stats for Hillary and Gillibrand side by side.

Also, upstate New York has been very conservative for a long time. It's possible Gillibrand will vote the interests of the whole state when she is Senator.

Just a hope.

9. How she voted
According to the Human Rights Campaign, she voted

against the repealing of “Don’ Ask, Don’t Tell” legislation,

opposed legislation that would grant equal tax treatment for employer-provided health coverage for domestic partners,

opposed legislation to grant same-sex partners of U.S. citizens and permanent residents the same immigration benefits of married couples and

opposed legislation to permit state Medicaid programs to cover low-income, HIV-positive Americans before they develop AIDS.

who told ME how to breathe is still breathing through a tube. I find that snarky type of comment pretty offensive, very demeaning -- especially in response to a legitimate concern.

The point is she has a voting record that belies her 18-hour-old position.

Just like Obama was for gay marriage before he was against it.

We beat up Mittens and McStain for changing positions with every changing wind. We need to hold Dems to the same standard.

44. What's the standard? Not ever changing positions?
I think the criticism of Romney and McCain is that people didn't know which position they actually personally believed in because they had changed multiple times, sometimes within the same debate (that was Romney).

That's a far cry from someone taking a more progressive position because their new consituency (liberal state of New York, versus a conservative district).

To say those are the same thing is ridiculous.

Furthermore, with regard to telling you how to breate --I didn't tell *you*. I told the other poster and if you look at their rash of posts on this issue today, you'll see that their concerns are all over the map and not well defined.

It's just kind of ridiculous. Oh you can complain about anything you want, but I'm going to judge the quality of that complaint based on how you back up your complaint.

One senses a "reaching" in the complaints in that what's being complained about is really kind of thin. And here we are, she says the right thing about an issue (that she didn't say before) and it's derided as a flip flop.

Heck, if you don't want her to flip flop then she should keep her old position. THAT's the alternative.

37. Here is her position from late 2008:
IO: A decent portion of our readers are gay. What’s your position on same-sex marriage?

KG: What I’d like to do legislatively, on the federal level—and I think we’ll be able to do this with the new president—is actually make civil unions legal in all 50 states, make it the law of the land. Because what you want to fundamentally do is protect the rights and privileges of committed couples, so that they can have Medicare benefits, visit in the hospitals, have adoption rights. All things that we give to married couples, committed gay couples should be eligible for. And then the question of whether you call it a marriage or not, what you label it, that can be left to the states to decide.
so culturally oriented. My mom’s generation, they want their gay friends to have every right and privilege that they should be eligible for as a married couple, but they feel uncomfortable calling it marriage. To them, a marriage is a religious word that they learned from the Catholic Church: It’s a covenant between a man, a woman, and God. So they feel uncomfortable with the word. But they don’t feel uncomfortable with the rights and privileges.
I think the way you win this issue is you focus on getting the rights and privileges protected throughout the entire country, and then you do the state-by-state advocacy for having the title.

16. a chief economist at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce backed Obama
I'm a lifelong Republican - a supply-side conservative. I worked in the Reagan White House. I was the chief economist at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for five years. In 1994, I helped write the Republican Contract with America. I served on Bob Dole's presidential campaign team and was chief economist for Jack Kemp's Empower America.

This November, I'm voting for Barack Obama.

FYI, Kirsten Gillibrand has done a remarkable job in an area of NY that could use a few more people just like her. It's an area where Republicans are clearly in the majority, so you and the other know-it-alls can harp and bitch all day about her being a DLC whore and yada yada yada, and at the end of the day none of you walk 50 feet in her shoes and do what she's done to make a red area a less red.

39. or maybe you should educate yourself about NY
Take a look at the scores from the US Chamber of Commerce for 2007 for a bunch of other well-known members of Congress from New York, including those from New York City -- Gillibrand's 60 rating is right in line with the scores from folks like Rangel, Maloney, Lowey, Weiner, Towns, Ackerman, Israel, etc.

See post number 38 for the full list.

Edolphus Towns -- 65
Greg Meeks -- 58
Gary Ackerman - 55

50. I wouldn't consider being in the same category as Meeks a good thing.
Meeks is my congress-critter and he's practically useless constantly voting in ways that do not help the community like against net neutrality (because businesses never gouge communities that aren't seen as affluent) funding for wars vs no spending for housing infrastructure and jobs. You can never get through to him and he runs on both the Democrat and the Republican line. He got an F on the last Black Agenda Report based on his votes. (BAR basing their judgments on whether or not they favor bills supporting human, job creation, education, infrastructure and housing needs versus war and corporations based on how AA poll.)

So anyone who votes like that clown is not fit to be our Senator from NY.

Lie down with DLC dogs end up with corporatist fleas.
