What would make me happier

I will state for the record that I do not like many of the DLC crowd that have slithered into Obama's administration.

That said I do like much of what he has done in the first few days. Freezing most of Bush's midnight resolutions made me happy. Completely blanking out all Justice department opinions on torture for the last eight years had me grinning. And going after the corporate bastards for their misuse of money lent to them to help the economy for all of us also made me optimistic again. The impending order to close Gitmo promises to close the door on a lot of the BS the Bushites were into.

But if Obama wants to truly make it a good first week he needs to do away with the signing statements of the Bush administration. I don't know how he ought frame it legally to eliminate this defacto line item power that Bush exercised completely outside of constitutional authority but it MUST be done.

Maybe withdrawing from enforcing anything BUT the constitutionally approved method for governing (Veto, Affirm, pocket veto). Perhaps an executive order might help in this manner stating that all signing statements are to be read only as constitutionally merited- as a historical document to help understand what a presidents intent in passing the bill was.

He could also undo the various executive orders creating a near permanent veil of secrecy over Reagan, Bush I and Bush II's administrations.

Do these things and I will be absurdly happy.
