4. We had John "Wife Beater' Sweeney before her. After him, you can't get much worse.

5. I don't know much about him, but from what I've read today he sounds horrible.
I watched the presser and was impressed with her today. She seems like a smart, passionate advocate for the state.

7. NARAL Pro-Choice New York President Kelli Conlin's statements on Gillibrand
We are thrilled to congratulate Kirsten Gillibrand on her appointment to the United States Senate.

NARAL Pro-Choice New York led the call for a strong leader who will advocate for women in New York and around the country, particularly in the arena of reproductive rights. With a 100% pro-choice record, Congresswoman Gillibrand is precisely that leader.

Like her predecessor Hillary Clinton, Congresswoman Gillibrand has shown herself to be an ally and advocate for New York and for women across the country, co-sponsoring legislation to ensure access to and funding for contraception. We know that as Senator she will represent our interests with integrity and passion.

10. Gillibrand still needs some work...
...but if Obama will hurry up with that executive order gutting FISA and opening NSAT&T's infamous "Room 604A" to public scrutiny, that should take care of FISA all by itself.

20. Can any of you who are from that district give us a preview of the special election for her sight?
One of my concerns about the Gillibrand pick is that it creates an open seat in a Republican-majority district. I hope we have someone who can win it.

21. I'm not, but I know people who are. Honestly it looks pretty strange.
Neither party has what you'd call a deep bench there. There are major candidates on both sides who would have to move into the district. It doesn't look very good for us, as there's a major Republican uphill advantage. She's popular, and her endorsement might net some extra votes for whoever the Dems run, but the odds remain bad. On the other hand though, it is only one House seat.
