Google Maps could learn a thing or two about zooming in from these guys. Not even "Street Level" comes close!

A bunch of images overlapped to create a large pano you can zoom in and out of, at least that's what it looks like to me.

Look at the guy in sunglasses two rows back from Clarence Thomas.

And on the walkway to the left of the VIP section, there's a dude with a goatee and flat cap who appears to be in two places at once.

How I Made a 1,474-Megapixel Photo During President Obama’s Inaugural Address

Wow.

I covered my first inauguration and what an inauguration it was.

Barack Obama became the 44th President of the United States in a ceremony on the west front of the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, DC.

Before Tuesday, I had photographed five presidents and covered big events including the Olympics, the Super Bowl, and concerts like Live 8 and Live Earth.

But this one was the biggest.

It deserved a big photo.

I made a panoramic image showing the nearly two million people who watched President Obama’s inaugural address. To do so, I clamped a Gigapan Imager to the railing on the north media platform about six feet from my photo position. The Gigapan is a robotic camera mount that allows me to take multiple images and stitch them together, creating a massive image file.

My final photo is made up of 220 Canon G10 images and the file is 59,783 X 24,658 pixels or 1,474 megapixels. It took more than six and a half hours for the Gigapan software to put together all of the images on my Macbook Pro and the completed TIF file is almost 2 gigabytes.

Edited on Fri Jan-23-09 06:27 PM by Drunken Irishman
Bush and Cheney do not.

The Bush twins look bored.

Hillary looks happy, Bill looks like he's thinking of somewhere else.

Jimmy Carter looks happy, too.

Michelle looks proud. You can tell she has so much respect for Pres. Obama.

Just my take. I was smiling through the whole thing. :D

59. Yeah, I just heard the NPR story on that last night. At first I was a little disappointed,
but then I thought about the cold and wind up on that stand, and realized it would have been a rough performance at best. So they just pantomimed what they had recorded two days before; no big deal, really. It was a great rendition.

and not that healthy.

It still hard for me to imagine all these people sitting or standing for at least an hour at that cold, most without warm hats and gloves and scarves.

63. I was wonderig about that during the
performance - how do they get that sound from those instruments in the cold & wind? I played a cello at one time and know wooden instruments go flat/sharp at the least temp/moisture change. Just moving outside from inside should have made those instruments out of tune.

No big deal since it was their recording.

I admit, took me a while to get my orientation once I started to zoom in. Was not sure about that tower in front and then I just followed the directions where people were looking.

And who took control of my computer? When I wanted to find out more about this site, and deleted the URL except the main name

http://gigapan.org/

Without me touching the mouse, my screen zoomed into... well, try it.
