Obama trading cards? Stop it!!!!!!!

Obama trading cards? What next? Lunch pails?

There it was, sitting right next to the perennially NBA box of basketball cards hermetically sealed packets on a display case near the cash registers at Target. Next to the basketball cards was a box of Obama trading cards! Over the years, trading cards had unusual series of cards. Back in 1964 during Beatle mania, there was the movie, “Hard Days Night” series starring the mop tops. In the mid 60’s, trading cards manufactures try to sell anything, for example, Television shows; they had a series of cards like, “Batman”. Well, trading cards faded when boomers grew up, however Baseball cards never went out of style. Once in a while they have a weird series. 4 years ago some company released a series called: Operation Iraqi freedom. It was trading cards with photos of various tanks, guns and victorious looking American soldiers in clean uniforms posing with weapons. Believe me, that is a collector’s item. But Obama trading cards? When was the last time you saw a trading card for a president of the United States?
Is it exploitation? Ever since that poster of Barack by Shepard Fairey was posted illegally on the streets of Los Angeles, the market got flooded with imitators, and then came the tsatskes (Pronounced, “Cha-ots-keys”. A Yiddish word for little stuff) The Market was flooded with t-shirts, posters, bumper stickers, and commemorative plates. How can the politically right accuse Obama of socialism when capitalism is making pretty penny from his name? Isn’t that the essence of Capitalism? Exploitation? Michelle Obama is not too happy with Ty Inc. The Company that made Beanie Babies is making Sasha and Malia dolls. Will it stop? Yeah it will, when nobody has jobs anymore.
Note to producers of horror movies, 2 words, “Abu Gitmo” Nuff said.

3. You object to trading cards ?
I am a big believer in PERSONAL FREEDOM, because I want them for myself as well ...

If someone wants to create any such cards, and if someone else wants to buy an such cards, then who the fuck are YOU to interfere ?

It is not inherently immoral or dangerous to trade those cards .....

You have a right to speak your mind, but that right is no more significant than the right of those to produce these cards ....

Isnt freedom wonderful ?

Edited on Sun Jan-25-09 04:10 PM by Clio the Leo
But you might wanna get used to it. It's when he starts being burned in effigy MORE often than he appears in a collector's plate commercial that we need to be concerned.

He belongs to the world now and he is the vehicle through which we can all walk a little taller.

(this picture was taken in Inda btw.)

I think it's terrific that they've become interested in government. Who cares if they learn something from a piece of cardboard or from a sheet of paper between two pieces of cardboard? I don't and I don't think President Obama would, either. When he was here in Illinois, it wouldn't have occurred to him find it offensive that children are memorizing history/government cards the way they do baseball cards. We knew him as a practical, results oriented man with his feet solidly planted on the ground. He hasn't done anything in Washington to change that assessment.

29. I highly encourage this industry - I may be making a small amount of cash myself from it.
Since I've mentioned Obama a few times in my blog, I've noticed that the Google Adsense blocks on my page have been showing ads for sites selling, well, Obama bling.

I'll take the ad revenue.

It would be much easier to keep track of them all in handy card form with pictures. Voting stats could be printed on the back. Educational and fun!

34. It reminds me of Ben Franklin....
Ben was a freakin' rock star in France. Pill boxes with his face painted on them, women wore a hair style that mimicked his stupid hat...people couldn't get enough of him.

The stuff being sold on every street corner in DC during last week's inauguration cracked me up. This was the first inauguration experience for me so I don't know if all the Presidents get this treatment, but Obama's picture and name were plastered on just about anything you can imagine.

38. The Obama Economy
Not the American econmy that he wants to improve as president, but the vast array of Obama related goods and collectables. There was an article at the end of last year about how stores were in a downturn but Obama merchandise was still selling.

I say it's a good thing, if there is a market for something then make it and sell it. If you don't someone else will.....

40. You need to STOP IT.
If you don't like this stuff...here's an idea...DON'T BUY IT!

If there is a person who makes an item and another person who wants to buy it...it's okay. (As long as that item isn't illegal.) That's what it means to live in a free society.

Personally...I'd like to put an end to needless complaining. But, in a free society that is allowed so all I can do is address it and ignore it or just ignore it.

41. Hey it beats the crap out of idolizing rappers, Madonna, Britney, etc., etc.
Obama has made history, government and politics interesting again.

We've always worshipped athletes, actors, and musicians in this country but never subjects like history, government, politics, science, reading, writing, math and science.

It's not just a subject that kids have to take in school but one that they are so interested in that people are actually able to make money off of it.

I think the Sasha and Malia dolls are over the top but I think having "trading cards" of politicians - the President, the Congress, the Senate, the Supreme Court, the Governors, etc. is an excellent idea myself.

:patriot:

If there were only someone who could make math, science or reading and writing as interesting as Obama has made "government" and "politics" it would work wonders for kids educations.

It may be that Obama will help make these other subjects "cool" also given his obvious interest in technology and extraordinary abilities as both a writer and an orator.
