Gillibrand Meets With Clinton
Gillibrand Meets With Clinton

Kathy Willens/Associated Press

Gov. David A. Paterson, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kirsten E. Gillibrand and Senator Charles E. Schumer on Sunday.

By SHARON OTTERMAN
Published: January 25, 2009

Two days before she will be sworn in as New York’s junior senator, a smiling Kirsten E. Gillibrand said Sunday that she planned to “hit the ground running.”

“It’s thrilling,” said Ms. Gillibrand, the 42-year-old Congresswoman from the sprawling 20th Congressional district around Albany. “You will see me everywhere in the state. You will see me wherever you want to see me.”

Ms. Gillibrand spoke to reporters after finishing a congratulatory lunch at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York with the newly minted Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Charles E. Schumer, the state’s senior senator, and New York Governor David A. Paterson, who appointed Ms. Gillibrand on Friday to fill Ms. Clinton’s vacated senate seat.

Ms. Gillibrand said that the four discussed foreign policy and how to best stimulate the flagging economy, and Ms. Clinton had offered her some practical advice on how to be an effective senator. The governor joined Ms. Gillibrand at the news conference that followed, but Ms. Clinton and Mr. Schumer did not appear.

“The senator knows that she has very big shoes to fill,” Governor Paterson said, adding that while the state would miss Ms. Clinton, “we will be in a position where we are well served, because Ms. Gillibrand, as a congresswoman, has been outstanding.”

1. I don't know why,
but that quartet does not reassure me as a Democrat at all.

4. And they're all ignoring Paterson
Paterson is a spineless buffoon. He let Schumer and Hillary dictate to him what he needs to do. In the end, he hurt himself more than anyone else and will not be elected governor in 2010.

Gillibrand? Seems like she was hand-picked by Hillary and Schumer.

7. The rumor mill is going nuts. A friend told me today that he thought
it was odd that Richardson and Kennedy suddenly had issues and had to remove themselves from the any consideration for office. They thought it had something to do with supporting our President. I won't let my mind think these two were sabotaged.

vetting process that the investigation would be over in time for the confirmation process but when it became clear it was still on-going, the outcome was inevitable. As for Caroline, I would say she sabotaged herself.

21. I think it's an attempt for the New Way/DLC to take over the Democratic Senate ...
they can work together with the Blue Dogs of the house to support corporations and lower the taxes for the rich.

And I know that he isn't my Governor or Senior Senator and that she isn't my Junior Senator, but these are dire and urgent times. I have faith in all of them to get us out of this period of uncertainty.

her direct phone number. Might be a good person to mentor back home in NY.

18. Finally!
An explanation of that picture. I totally have no opinion on this issue, but that nice photo has been flashed around like it's the Tea Party of Doom. I was really getting puzzled. I mean, I think lime in tea is yucky, but it's not a deal breaker for me. :)

23. Thank goodness that DU is not real life!!!
There's nothing nefarious about the four of them having tea at the Waldorf. The same tea would have occurred if Caroline, Cuomo or anyone else would have been appointed to the job. The 3 NY senators and the governor of NY meeting to welcome and impart advise to the newcomer. What's so strange about it?

the OP title....Gillibrand Meets With Clinton ...

You and I see FOUR people at that table...including the SENIOR Senator from New York! The OP apparently sees only two people.

That much hate must be difficult to maintain, doncha think?

30. Bingo that this luncheon would have gone down whoever the replacement was
It's kind of interesting to think about what would have been projected on to this photo had the choice been Caroline by the Clinton conspiracy theorists.

There is no end to it. And frankly it's just getting boring!
