Poll question: Poll: Who Read The Stimulus Bill?
Edited on Mon Jan-26-09 12:11 PM by Shiver
As everyone likely knows, the House Stimulus Bill has been made available for viewing by the public on numerous websites (for example, here.

A lot has been said about this in the few days since it came out, but I was wondering how many here actually read it - and among those that did, how much of it they read, and how much of it they understood. (The first "Read it an understood it" vote you see is myself, so you know where I'm coming from.)

Please be honest in your answers; hearing Rachael Maddow talk about it on her show or some columnist analyze it in an article does not count as having read it.

Edit to include: Those that read it, in full or in partial, please post your thoughts on the overall bill- good things, bad things, things you're unsure about, whatever.

1. you're right
page 14 is funny:

"None of the funds provided by this Act may be made
4 available to the State of Illinois, or any agency of the
5 State, unless (1) the use of such funds by the State is
6 approved in legislation enacted by the State after the date
7 of the enactment of this Act, or (2) Rod R. Blagojevich
8 no longer holds the office of Governor of the State of Illi9
nois. The preceding sentence shall not apply to any funds
10 provided directly to a unit of local government (1) by a
11 Federal department or agency, or (2) by an established
12 formula from the State."

ouch.

3. After all the grousing about lobbyists flocking to state legislators, I frankly find the oversight
part pretty convincing.

recovery.gov for example.

4. Another example being
the $233,500,000 designated for the various Inspectors General just for oversight. That, in conjunction with Recovery.org, should make sure the money is being spent properly.

6. I think the timeframe of 120 days
Is because they want the money to be spent as quickly as possible. Many counties, cities and states have had transportation items on the shelf for years, though, so it's likely that they'll be ready to spend it quickly. These projects likely won't be "on the spur of the moment", I'm hoping, and will be used for vital projects the state and county governments have been wanting to implement for years.

Yeah, the font sucks. They need to stop writing bills with Microsoft Word.
