Lawrence O'Donnell (uh, maybe)
I think it was O'Donnell on MSNBC a little while ago talking about Obama and Rush Limbaugh. I like the way he responded to Rush's alleged fear of socialism succeeding as the reason for his wanting Obama to fail..

Anyway, O'Donnell (I think it was him) said that Rush wanted to know of any case where socialism actually succeeded, and O'Donnell gave him two, right here in the U.S. - SS and Medicare, the most successful of any programs. Let Rush say on his program that he opposes these and ask for their abolishment. His fans, most of whom are on SS wouldn't take kindly.

He went on to say that almost every country in the world has a combination of socialism and capitalism.

Perhaps Obama should put more people on the tube to explain socialism to everyday people so they understand that it's NOT communism.

Besides, the only thing the Republicans ever come up with is cutting taxes and the reason we're in debt is because there are so many people not working now to pay any taxes to cut.

1. I watched Advise and Consent this weekend. Hmm still don't think our country can deal with
socialism talk.
Maybe in a couple years.

6. I don't think that people understand ownership..
They don't seem to realize that there is business, stock market, home and business ownership, etc., but some things the government handles, like health care and pensions, etc.

I'd like to see them control more natural resources, like water for instance, so that they don't play around with our fawcetts like they do at the pumps.

2. Yes, it was O'Donnell. I liked the way he said that Palin clearly
didn't understand what socialism is, she was just spouting words to rile her base.

There is a real negative knee-jerk reaction to the word 'socialism' in this country and I agree with you that the public should be educated about it. Many people don't even realize how many aspects of our government are socialized.

3. Liberal fiction writers could greatly help...
When they do movies about people overseas taken ill, or spies being shot, beat up, how easy it would be to slip in a "no charge" to the American patient when he leaves the doctor's office or hospital - "We have national health care in this country."

Novelists, TV drama writers, and soap opera writers could incorporate the health care idea easily using the "too bad we don't have health care" when characters go abroad.

4. That is an excellent idea! People really need education about
healthcare. I can't tell you how many people I talk to think that national healthcare means government run clinics, no choice of doctors and waiting lists for surgery. The Repukes have done a VERY good job of brainwashing people.

They don't understand the difference between socialized coverage and socialized medicine. I always use the Medicare example and that seems to help a bit.

But you are so right - having this topic go mainstream would do so much to educate the population.

5. Don't forget those socialist unemployment benefits too!
Benefits that I'm sure many of Rush's devotees are currently living off of.
