John McCain: I will not support Obama's Plan
Arizona Senator John McCain took aim Sunday at President Barack Obama’s first landmark bill, an ambitious package of spending and tax cuts to boost the shrinking economy.

“As it stands now, I would not support it,” McCain, who lost the presidential race to Obama in November, said on “Fox News Sunday.”

Obama’s “post-partisan” era is off to a rocky start as negotiations over the $825 billion recovery package devolve into the usual bickering between Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) promised Sunday to bring a House-crafted package to the floor later this week. But Republicans lined up for the Sunday shows to express their opposition.

“If it’s the plan I see today, put me down in the ‘no’ column,” House Republican leader John A. Boehner said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “A lot of Republicans will vote ‘no’ because they see this as a lot of wasteful spending.”

Obama has reached out to Republicans repeatedly since winning the White House and will make another trip to Capitol Hill to Tuesday to appeal directly to GOP lawmakers in the House and Senate.

Pelosi, who made it clear last week that Democrats are now in charge, argues that Republicans have had ample input in the recovery package.

“Because Republicans don’t vote for it doesn’t mean they didn’t have an opportunity to,” the speaker said on ABC’s “This Week.”

“There needs to be a major rewrite if we want to stimulate the economy,” McCain said.

McCain’s words notwithstanding, the dynamic in the Senate is shaping up to be far less partisan than that in the House, with the White House already trying to broker a compromise with chamber Republicans before Democratic leaders unveil their own legislation later this week.

9. Not done on purpose. He will not support the plan as it is written now...McCain made a grammatical
error in his statement, mine is correct, I think:

"I would not support the plan as it is written now"
"I will not support the plan as it is written now"

15. McCain is free to use the subjunctive tense in that way...
don't you think the title distorts McCain's statement?
It suggests McCain has already decided how he will vote.

3. John McCain, who owns 10 houses, opposes action on the Jobs Bill
That should be publicized. Sen. McCain has declared that efforts to boost the economy and help the vast numbers of unemployed go back to work is "wasteful spending."

Maybe if the rest of us had 10 houses we could fall back on in hard times, we would feel as John McCain does. Otherwise, this is just more salt in the wound of those who are already hurting.

Like he knows anything. If it weren't for his rich wife and his Daddy's connections, McCain would be nothing. (He's really nothing in spite of these facts.)

The Republicans have the nerve to complain wasteful spending.

Iraq = WASTEFUL (unnecessary war, no-bid contracts, work paid for but not done, no checks and balances)

The Republicans want to talk about waste after the fiscal damage they've done under Bush? Right.

HYPOCRITES! :eyes:

Obama's $825B stimulus plan includes spending, tax cuts
Updated 1/16/2009 1:14 PM
By Richard Wolf, USA TODAY

WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama's $825 billion plan to jump-start the economy and create or save up to 4 million jobs includes twice as much money for spending as for tax cuts, setting up an early battle with Republicans in Congress who favor a different approach.
House Democrats unveiled the first details Thursday of the package, which is likely to change — and get even more expensive — as it moves through the House and Senate. Obama wants it on his desk by mid-February.

The emergency package includes $550 billion to be spent within two years — more than the government spends annually on programs not including defense and benefit programs such as Medicare and Social Security.

About $318 billion would go to cash-strapped state and local governments facing the prospect of layoffs or tax increases. The money will go toward such things as school repairs and road construction and help pay for rising Medicaid costs.

An additional $102 billion would help victims of the recession with unemployment insurance, health care, food stamps and job training. Jobless aid, available for up to 59 weeks, would be increased by about $25 a week. Much of the $275 billion in tax cuts would go to middle-income families in the form of $1,000 tax cuts ($500 for individuals). An array of business and other tax cuts would make up the remainder.

I knew the "common ground" would end up being narrow and shifting. The RW has the man owned in a lot of ways; the pathetic campaign he "ran" made that painfully obvious. He's probably afraid the GOP here in Arizona will boot him out next year if he conceeds TOO much to President Obama....; "Myth of a Maverick" indeed..

36. They don't want to pass anything helpful. They don't want the economy to fail
under Bush/GOP rule and then get turned around under Obama/Dems. They want another Depression, they want all Dem policies and ideas to fail, they want a miserable electorate who scorns the Dem party--and then maybe, just maybe, they can restore themselves to power in 2010 or 2012. Limpballs openly admitted wanting Obama (and thus the nation) to fail.

Repukes and their schemes. As I stated earlier, the Repukes only want to give the appearance of supporting the president, all the while they plan to obstruct any piece of legislation they can. The problem is that the media is giving them so much airtime in which to propagandize their talking points. You would have surely thought that the Republicans won an overwhelming victory in November; they were all over the Sunday morning talk shows yesterday. And yet, some DUers are coming after me for making these comments. I don't want Obama and the Dems to lie down and get fucked. I want them to stand up for core Democratic Party principles, just as the Republicans tend to do. One reason why the Republicans seem to win is that they never back down. It's a quality that makes me so jealous because I would like for the Democrats to do the same for once. Just once! They won an convincing victory; Obama won a convincing victory. And yet all this talk of bipartisanship has not persuaded the Republican party to cooperate. The president needs to understand that he cannot be fooled by these right-wing nutcases!!

43. I agree--they're like a pack of hungry power-starved hyenas right now, ready to
howl and attack at the first stumble or show of weakness by Obama or Dems. All wild animals are most dangerous when they're backed into a corner. I hope Obama holds to his pledge to hear them out and pursue any good ideas they might have, but he must recognize that most of them do not have the nation's best interests at heart, and that they will turn on him in lightning speed.

I hear the Democrats will squeak by with a win on this package anyway, but Obama wants to show cooperation from the Republicans so there's not a chance of any problem in February when he signs the bill. That's why he'll be speaking with only the Republicans tomorrow.

But me, I'd love to see the "Keating Five" thrown in McCain's face again!
