Michael Steele was elected head of the Republican National Committee (RNC) today, the first African-American to hold the position.

It took six rounds of voting for Michael Steele to win. After round 4, in fact, South Carolina party chairman Katon Dawson was ahead by two votes, 62 - 60.

85 was the minimum number of votes required to win election; Michael Steele won in round 6 with 91 votes out of a possible 168. Katon Dawson finished with 77 votes.

Michael Steele is, as I said, the first African-American in the position. The GOP has been roundly criticized for the fact that its membership appears to be mostly made up of Caucasian males. It was said that the party needed to expand its ethnic diversity if it is to be significant in coming elections.

Steele was greatly helped by receiving the endorsement of Ken Blackwell, former Ohio Secretary of State, who dropped out after the fourth ballot. Michael Steele served as Lieutenant Governor of Maryland from 2003 through 2007.

that after the initial flurry of articles announcing the final outcome, having followed a month's worth of intense media speculation and bloviating, there is now a deathly silence as the shock sets in.... A pall has now settled over the Greedy Old Pukes as the Palin wing's "base" experiences mass head-explosion.

Add to this the ascension of Rash Limpballs as their unholy leader and the mutiny of their own governors who are making deals with the Democratic party behind their backs, and one can see that when repukes go out, they go out in style!

"Groups of men from a Philadelphia homeless shelter said they were brought to Prince George’s County early Nov. 7 by Republican Senate candidate Michael Steele’s campaign and told to pass out fliers publicizing information that county officials say is misleading.

Three men stood at the front entrance of the University Park Elementary School precinct wearing Steele T-shirts and hats, passing out pamphlets titled, 'Ehrlich-Steele Democrats.' The pamphlets had pictures of Prince George’s County Executive Jack Johnson, former county executive Wayne Curry and former Democratic Senate candidate Kweisi Mfume. At the bottom, it read, 'These are our choices.' The flier says it was authorized by both the Steele and Ehrlich campaigns . . .

Two of the men, Gary Swimpson and Leon Watson, told The Gazette that volunteers from the Steele campaign came to their homeless shelter in Philadelphia in the wee hours of Tuesday, offering $100, donuts and coffee for anyone willing to work the polls on Election Day. Swimpson said several buses left for Prince George’s with about 500 men."
