3. I'll be a heretic and admit I've never gotten him
But I have loved some of his songs when they were covered by other artists (i.e., Emmylou Harris and others). He just doesn't speak to me for whatever reason

17. for all these years, I thought I was the only one in the world who felt (somewhat) the same way
He seems like a great person, but I don't understand the huge appeal of his music; it doesn't speak to me either. I'm glad he makes a lot of people happy.

30. I Think He Has The "Everyman" Appeal
The blue collar element in all of use. It's the same "small town in all of us" that Don Henley alludes to in "The End Of The Innocence" Nothing to apologize for though if you don't get him or his appeal.

My favorite solo male artists in no particular order

Dylan

Jackson Browne

Don Henley

Bruce Springsteen

Elvis

Johnny Cash

Sinatra

31. if you want to "get" Bruce, go to a concert . . .
Edited on Mon Feb-02-09 08:34 AM by OneBlueSky
you will most definitely get him, his music, the E Street Band, and the entire experience like you've never gotten anything in your life . . . I've taken people who didn't particularly like Bruce to their first concerts, and the results have always been the same . . . "I didn't KNOW!" . . .

btw (and imho), Bruce's best album by far is "The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle" . . . it's an often overlooked and underappreciated rock classic that contains some of his best songs . . . "New York City Serenade," with David Sancious' keyboard work, is sublime . . .

4. Was about to say...
Edited on Sun Feb-01-09 08:20 PM by Hissyspit
He spoke out against the Bush admimistration when it was not popular.

Sang "War" right before the war started, supported Dixie Chicks, said 'bring 'em home' on national television when it wasn't popular.

Screw the haters. Some right-winger called him "grandpa" in a comments section the other day. Which, besides being stupid and ageist, is incorrect. He has kids, none of whom have their own kids.

6. He also worked his ass off for Obama for voter Registration
Put on 5 concerts in swing states to register voters. I was 20 feet away from him in Philadelphia for the concert there.

24. we could have used him for voter registration
Before 2008, his hometown (Asbury Park, NJ) had some of the lowest voter turnout in the country. I did 3 voter registration drives there, and if Bruce was at just one of them, we could have easily blown our registration numbers out of the water.

Apparently his dad walks the boardwalk in Asbury Park every day, and I'm sure I've seen him but I wouldn't recognize him.

And he rocked tonight.

5. I used to be a fan of his 70's stuff...
but then he developed that annoying hick accent that he sings with exclusively now. I can't take it anymore!!! I feel like pulling my hair out everytime I hear him sing!

7. Um...
he's from rural industrial and farmland stock in central N.J. Plus, he was reinterpreting blues, traditional country and folk idioms. And what does that have to do with the content of the albums? "Magic" was a moving rebuttal and indictment of the Bush era, and "Devils and Dust" was speaking in the voice of the common soldier.

I could live the rest of my life without ever hearing "Glory Days" again.

But he does reinterpret stuff when he performs it in concert and doesn't do "Greatest Hits" shoes, but tells a new story with each concert.

This was the fixed song order in the set list right before the encore break from throughout the 'Magic' tour. Notice how the old songs take on new meaning as they are placed in a specific order with the newer songs, saying something about the state in which America had found itself.

Devil's Arcade
The Rising
Last to Die
Long Walk Home
Badlands

...he chose it as a celebration of these 'new' days?? Dunno.

14. I've always misinterpreted a line in that song as "ask if she's...
...purchased a bed".

lol, I've always known it probably doesn't say that (although it kinda fits into the overall scheme of the song), but if I ever heard the true lyrics, I don't remember.

16. Purchased a bed???
I'm weeping laughing here!!

You even had me checking the lyrics.

"Well there's a girl that lives up the block
Back in school she could turn all the boy's heads
Sometimes on a friday i'll stop by
And have a few drinks after she put her kids to bed."

Did you find "purchased beds' in that verse?

 x 2

Edited on Mon Feb-02-09 10:44 AM by riqster
Yeah, maybe he should have paced himself better so as to have enough breath to sing with more accuracy, but in the end, he's about passion not perfection, and he left it all on the stage. He is the real deal.

Helluva performance for a guy who is known for playing several-hour-long shows, to condense it down like that.
