Never forget the Day of Shame -- please K&R if you agree we must remember!
Day of Shame 2009 is this Thursday, February 5th!

You are invited to participate in building the online memory book about Colin Powell's UN presentation and the media's celebration of it.

Please read and link to this post to help get the word out via your blog, e-mail, Twitter, etc!

This year's sixth anniversary is the first without George W. Bush in the White House. Dare we presume that the factors that led to the war, and its successful marketing, all went packing with him?

1. Thanks for the "Rs"...
Please don't forget to "K," too, or the post scrolls of the list of recent items.

2. If I were compiling a Grand List of National Shames,
I don't think that presentation ends up in the first twenty pages. But, you know, I like the concept, so K&R.

3. The official blessing of the Iraq War
Doesn't rank up there for you?

I've been on this Earth and in this country for over 50 years, and it was the most shocking thing I'd ever seen. Absolute mass hysteria and lying mass media, leading to death, destruction, financial ruin, and loss of reputation to an astounding degree.

12. Indeed
Has our lying media been improved one iota since then? Without honest media or a more skeptical public, we are completely at the mercy of our politicos, and we will be condemned to repeat such fiascoes whenever they get such a whim.

6. The media gushed over Powell's presentation ...
... and pretty much declared the issue was settled ... there was NO DOUBT the WMD were there and the war was justified.

Did the media simply fail to do their homework or was there an agenda at work here?

9. My Brush with Gwen Ifill
I'll be posting a revised version of this on Day of Shame this week, without the bad words that might offend some, but it's pretty galling the response one gets to a question much like yours.

15. She dodged the question
Ifill was asked about reporting during the run-up and she responds with kudos to her profession for stories that RESULTED from the war that should have been prevented.

She obviously didn't want to deal the the media's pre-war failures. I'd like to see her response to questions about the failure to expose the LIES that took us to war. No doubt she'd dodge that one too.

16. Ifill's media defense
If you take good pictures of your own crime scene, you're not a murderer, you're an artist!

11. I'll be writing about the various bits of praise that...
Powell received this year from people who should have known better. Stay tuned at http://www.dayofshame.com

I did like one thing Powell did this year, his answer to the "Muslim smear," though it's hardly enough to wipe his record clean:

But the really right answer is "what if he is?" Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country? The answer is no, that's not America. Is there something wrong with some seven-year-old Muslim-American kid believing that he or she could be president? Yet I have heard senior members of my own party drop the suggestion he's a Muslim and he might be associated with terrorists. This is not the way we should be doing it in America. I feel strongly about this particular point because of a picture I saw in a magazine. It was a photo essay about troops who are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. And one picture at the tail end of this photo essay was of a mother at Arlington Cemetery. And she had her head on the headstone of her son's grave. And as the picture focused in, you could see the writing on the headstone. And it gave his awards, Purple Heart, Bronze Star. Showed that he died in Iraq. Gave his date of birth, date of death. He was twenty years old. And then at the very top of the headstone, it didn't have a Christian cross, it didn't have a Star of David. It had a crescent and a star of the Islamic faith. And his name was Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan, and he was an American. He was born in New Jersey. He was fourteen years old at the time of 9/11. And he waited until he could go serve his country, and he gave his life. Now, we have got to stop polarizing ourselves in this way.
