Why not Rep. Jim McDermott or Rep. Vic Snyder for HHS?
Like our favorite Howard Dean, they are both physicians and McDermott has supported insurance for the poor and unemployed as well as universal health care. On the Republican side, perhaps Rep. Greg Ganske.

3. mcdermott is as democratic as they come
remember "bagdhad jim"?

as a resident on the WA 7th, i'd like to see him move on - he's been our rep for 20+ years, and some new, fire-breathing blood would be welcome.

2. McDermott is a great man and I love his politics but wonder if he isn't
too much of an independent actor to head a big bureacracy.

7. I actually spent a couple of days with him in the 70s when he went
to Thailand to view the boat people refugee camps in person. I don't see him (and I don't think he sees himself) as somebody that has an interest in leading a large bureacracy. Also he is 72 years old - not sure how his age would be a factor.
