Dean: Hot Name On The List To Replace Daschle
Edited on Tue Feb-03-09 10:26 PM by Me.
"With Tom Daschle removed from his planned role as chief architect of President Obama's health care policy, the search has already begun for his replacement. Governor Howard Dean, no longer heading the DNC, is the hot name on the list, having been in the early discussion for head of the Department of Health and Human Services.

The fit seems logical -- Dean is a former doctor and has implemented health care reform, and it would go a long way to pleasing rank-and-file Democrats. But the choice is not without frictions: he reportedly has a cool relationship with some White House officials, most notably chief of staff Rahm Emanuel. Either way, don't expect to hear much from Dean or his allies, who declined to comment for this article. The surest way to spoil a nomination is to talk about it, the Governor told the Huffington Post back in November." cont...

11. Dean would be absolutely terrific. And we can trust him! If says we have to compromise,
Then I would believe that we have to. However, I don't think he'd ever think that we have to compromise. He'd just think we have to fight harder.

Dean's the man!

9. Probably, but anything that gets it to the top of google and into the vetters computers
I assume they will try for some more careful vetting this time. However, this could be a big bone to the grassroots if they go with Dr. Dean. I would probably give them a pass on the next dozen mistakes if they did give this one to Dr. Dean.

3. Bradley would be an interesting pick. I also like David Cutler
Honored for his scholarly work and singled out for outstanding mentorship of graduate students, Professor Cutler's work in health economics and public economics has earned him significant academic and public acclaim. Professor Cutler served on the Council of Economic Advisers and the National Economic Council during the Clinton Administration and advised the Presidential campaigns of Bill Bradley and John Kerry. Among other affiliations, Professor Cutler has held positions with the National Institutes of Health and the National Academy of Sciences. Currently, Professor Cutler is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and a member of the Institute of Medicine.

Professor Cutler is the author of Your Money Or Your Life: Strong Medicine for America's Health Care System, published by Oxford University Press. This book, and Professor Cutler's ideas, were the subject of a feature article in the New York Times Magazine, The Quality Cure, by Roger Lowenstein. Cutler was recently named one of the 30 people who could have a powerful impact on healthcare by Modern Healthcare magazine.

5. Dean is the best choice
He's
1) available and does not hold a senate or congressional seat that will be replaced by a Republican governor
2) he's a former physician whose passion is healthcare reform and he helped spearhead a prototype plan in Vermont while he was governor.
3) Dean can work with Republicans, moderate Republicans. No one can work with the extremists Repukes
4) Dean is a team player
5) If Obama really believes in the "Team of Rivals" then he will nominate Howard Dean as HHS. Rahm and Howard can be the rivals but also be on team Obama. Question is, is Rahm a team player?
6) Selecting Dean will be an olive branch to progressives who have been perturbed by Obama stuffing his Admin with Clintonistas.

19. Plus one little detail they left out
Howard would NEVER lobby for the post on his own. He's too much of a pro for that.
He'll react to an offer as he sees fit (and I hope it's yes!!), but he would never
lobby for it behind the scenes.

This one is for the Obama White House to do on their own--or not. A few hundred thousand
emails in Howard's favor to the White House wouldn't hurt.........

31. I'd feel better if I saw this on the from page of the Wall Street Journal
The Huffington Post, while respected in some quarters, does not set the tone for
Obama administration appointments. I saw the New York Times had a big editorial
come out (ironically, the same day) for Daschle's withdrawing his name. Why the
hell can't they come out and say who they ARE for? If the NYT, Washington Post,
Newsweek, MSNBC or some kind of MSM would take a stand, maybe Howard would have
a serious chance. So far, he is the darling of a few blogs, and the MSM are shutting
up (OK, who is surprised?) about him.

The one place where Howard's name being "hot" would count is the Obama White House,
and I haven't heard a peep from them. Maybe no news is good news, but I'll feel better
when I hear Howard's name on the news, and see Rahm shaking hands with him on CNN, with
Obama smiling as he stands with Howard at some Whote House press podium.

So far, I've been whistling Dixie on that, but if you had told me that Daschle would
withdraw after Geithner and Holder got confirmed, I would have called you nuts, too.

Come on, President Obama--you got yours--now give us a little bit of ours! You wouldn't
be rewarding Howard for services rendered--you'd be rewarding the country for standing
behind you in the hope that you'd bring on people like Howard in the first place! If we
don't deserve a little recognition, what was the whole exercise about anyway?

I did last night and the more mail Obama gets the more he might (and right now I mean might) listen. It is time progressives got something after Gregg...gad, what a terrible blow that was. I'll never understand it. I also will never understand why Obama snubbed Dr. Dean at the announcement of the new DNC director. That was personally offensive to me.

43. Me spelled Rahm Emanuel right, but I don't..
I've emailed the White House comment site several times and have harshly criticized Czar Rham Rahm Emmmanual.

I even went so far as to tell them that I cancelled my monthly contribution (small as it is) to the DNC because of the trashing of Dean after the election, and in no way would I consider any further donations to the party.

The President needs Dean. Then there would be two honest men in the White House....tho I think Biden is honest and like him. I betcha Malia and Sasha would enjoy Howard doing his "Yahaaaaaaha" just for them.

Obama, I adore, and Michelle too.
