So WTF happened President Obama gets to D.C. and turns into a Washington insider ?
1. They allow Representative David R. Obey to author this weak stimulus bill
2. They allow the Republicans to frame the debate
3. They allow the media to mischaracterize polls and the content of the bill
4. The President seeks bi partisan support without even having full democratic support
5. They legitimize the GOP failures with all the tax cuts

2. I think you should wait at least three full weeks before you make any judgements
Obama's going to be a great president--please don't overlook all the good he's already done.

7. Why? The Democrats have been knocking down all the Repukes Amendments
And Collins and Snowe have been with them on all of them. This thing is headed for passage.

You seem to be letting the Repukes and the media frame your opinion.

Obama wanted 80 votes.

14.  it is easier to defeat their amendments, than to pass our stuff
If needed we could filibuster - needing just 41 votes to defeat something.

That why they have had the easier side - their goal for the last 2 years has been to defeat almost everything. As we control Congress, it was our responsibility to pass things - like budgets. (In addition, Democrats want government to do things - that means passing legislation.)

9. 1. He signed the Schip
Which the bush vetoed.

2. He's demanding salary caps on useless bankrupting CEOs - a whole lot more than any repuke ever did.

3. He stopped drilling in Utah National parks and most parks throughout the country.

4. He took off the pro-choice gag rule.

5. He stopped the fake trials in Gitmo.

6. He stopped the torture in Gitmo.

7. He's trying to get a REAL stimulus package through congress.

8. He named real diplomatic envoys to the Middle East and Afghanistan.

9. He tightened ethics rules for administration officials.

10. He instituted higher fuel efficiency standards.

11. He signed the anti-pay discrimination, Lillie Ledbetter Act.

And that was just in the first 15 days.

15. Very nice list - this would make a great thread just by itself
This is what is needed to put things into perspective. We need to see that our win was real. It has totally changed where the battleground is. We need to remember how frustrating it was when Bush vetoed SCHIP which had passed with quite near the 2/3 rds needed to over ride the veto. We need to balance the media that paid little attention to that victory compared to the time spent on failed nominees.

16. 'all the tax cuts'
Edited on Thu Feb-05-09 08:11 AM by high density
About a third of the money is tax cuts, and most of those cuts are focused on middle class earners. This was a much repeated theme during Obama's campaign!

I think one thing we're simply not used to here is that our guy is President now... The Repubes can try to frame the debate all they want, but Obama can get his own message out very easily (well, as long as Daschle isn't around making a f--king fool out of everybody.) Obama's op-ed today makes it clear that he knows who won and he knows what we (well, most of us) want him to do. The Repubes are a side show now, and they've made that clear through their insane posturing in the House. They've voted AGAINST a strong American economy. They've voted AGAINST middle class tax cuts. The Repubes have screwed themselves big time and now are apparently going after the President Hoover fans and libertarian voter bloc.

30. thank you
It boggles my mind with all the people complaining about the tax cuts when they are geared toward the middle class. These people never paid attention to the campaign when he said he'd cut taxes for the middle class and these clueless people clearly aren't paying attention now acting as if these taxes cuts are a giveway to the GOP(cough Krugman)

But of course, people are too stupid and uninformed to fucking figure that out.

Now, when the Senate gets done with it, we'll see how weak it is then.
