I'm Extremely Disappointed With Raw Story. Obama Did Not PRAISE a Torture Ruling
Edited on Thu Feb-05-09 01:52 PM by berni_mccoy
He thanked the UK for respecting U.S. National Security and Secret Information.

Raw Story has painted a completely unrealistic picture of what Obama actually said.

Here is their headline: "After Obama praises torture ruling, civil liberties group appalled"

And Story: http://rawstory.com/news/2008/ACLU_Hope_flickering_on_torture_after_0204.html

What was actually said by a spokesperson:

"The United States thanks the UK government for its continued commitment to protect sensitive national security information and preserve the long-standing intelligence sharing relationship that enables both countries to protect their citizens," a spokesman said.

That's not praise for torture. That's a thank you for respecting U.S. sensitive information. And Obama didn't say it.

1. I agree. The US thanked the UK for respecting an information-sharing agreement.
That's all.

2. was there ever any doubt...
That once a Democrat was elected, outlets like RawStory would come after him/her? Their business is drama. If there is none, they make it themselves.

9. Spokesmen get paid to express the views of the people who hire them
What makes you think that the spokesman did not consult with Obama first??

12. It's not words Obama spoke and it's not what Raw Story reported him as saying.
Edited on Thu Feb-05-09 03:17 PM by berni_mccoy
So your point is irrelevant.

Raw Story has an obligation not to change the meaning of what was actually said.

And they have an obligation to distinguish between what Obama says vs. his Administration officially states via spokesperson. They are not one in the same and there is a bad reason RS decided to report it as Obama's words.

15. Your meaning is someone else's meaninbg
Raw Story accurately represented the words by the spokesman.

You disagree. The ruling kept secret info secret. The spokesman praised the secretive party for this. It is that simple. The plaintiffs were the media including the NY Times, who wanted an outcome totally opposed to what Obama's spokesman praised.

16. I assume the ACLU disappoints you, too
Because they opened fire against Obama in a tone 20 times harsher than the Raw Story yesterdat.

When Obama is criticized, progressives entities such as the Raw Story and the ACLU begin to look like Rush Limbaugh and Hannity in the eyes of those who worship him. Krugman comes to mind, too.

of the same headline, not only Raw Story.

20. I get pissed at Raw Story so often repeating republican slanted stories.
Edited on Thu Feb-05-09 11:30 PM by LaPera
I can't tell you how how times I scream & yell at Raw Story pieces and really question what they are going for..... fairness?

No, because so many of the stories are just complete republican propaganda & lies...and that's the take Raw Story decides to offer on a particular story, the republican take.

21. "That's not praise for torture."
The article didn't say it was. The article said that Obama praised a "torture ruling."
"And Obama didn't say it." He did praise the ruling through his spokesperson.
The headline is way more accurate than your characterization of it.
