Any one who wasn't inspired should have their circulation checked with their doctor.

3. Here's the problem......
.... I just realized this in the kitchen when I was heating up some leftover chili. When you're cooking food that takes 2 mins, it gives you time to think.

So he's got this address to the nation on Monday. I assume it's going to be all ... ya know .... presidential .... it will involve a desk a suit and tie, that kinda thing.

What we saw tonight was classic Obama, the kinda thing that had folks lined up for four hours so they could see him give a speech from a mile away. But you cant preach like that when you're all serious in the Oval Office, or wherever ..... hmmmm ..... we NEED rhetorical flourishes, not somber pleas and warnings.

I say he needs to bus in a crowd. :)

Should be interesting either way.

11. He can clean it up a bit and still deliver it with passion
If for some reason the Senate filibusters the bill it is Katie bar the door time. A big ole can of whoop ass will be sprayed over the Republican brand on Monday.

I just realized that not only did the Republicans not come up with a decent alternative, but, more importantly, I can't recall one Repub mentioning the pain of the American Public.

I just ventured over to Freeperland to see what they were saying.

There was no mention of him being stupid.

There was no mention of him lying.

There was no mention of him slaughtering thousands of innocents.

There was no mention of him mocking the Constitution he was sworn to protect.

Nothing.

Makes you feel good.

(for those who are curious, all they could come up with is that he's "arrogant" lol)

5. I love him, and that scares me.
I do love many humans, but to love someone I don't really know personally. Well, that's a stretch. I've put both candidate Obama and President Obama through my mental ringer, which would obliterate the best of them, yet he comes out clean. I've also learned not to get on the "OMG, Obama is fucking this up" bandwagon. Been there, done that, and I've been totally PUNKED by Obama every single fucking time.

I feel absolutely REBORN after listening to that. Sometimes, it is so hard to cut through the "cable/DU chatter" and the relentless negativity to actually hear what the man's plans are and to see the level of support he has in the real world. That was great.

I live in an area where it is "all about me". These guys in the end are all the same. They serve the wealthy and even when they "attack them" offer plenty of loopholes for them to get around it.

I don't see Obama all that different. Perhaps the fact that he is not as arrogant as Bush was about it is a little refreshing. That's where I draw the line.

But the koolaid is useful for mass consumption. The netroots is not enough. We need to get the "masses" behind our initiatives. One way to do that is to get them to fall in love with Obama the person.

44. Boy, I'm sensing a lot of buzz kill in this room
Half the job of a president is to inspire and damn it, the man has that part down cold. And the things he's done after only a few days in office lead me to believe that he'll be much more than inspiring.

Yet we've got people here who just want to kill that buzz and accuse those of us who actually appreciate having a president who can walk and chew gum at the same time of "drinking the Koolaid."

Nobody's drinking Koolaid. We're simply responding as human beings to a politician -- a President -- who actually seems to be a human being himself, and truly cares about what has happened to this country during the last eight years, and wants to fix it.

Obama does not have a magic wand. He will not do all of the things we want him to. He will do some things we DON'T want him to. But, for Christ's sake, give the man a chance. A couple of weeks in office and people here are already writing him off as just another politician.

If that's how quickly you judge people, then I feel sorry for you.

I was inspired by that speech. I was impressed by it. And while I certainly have no interest in drinking any Koolaid, I'm certainly willing to give the man a HUGE amount of leeway.

If you bothered to listen to what he said -- and what he's been saying all along -- CHANGE WILL NOT COME EASILY.

So, please, rather than contribute to the chorus of boos, why don't you simply give the man time to prove himself?

66. I'd like to add, that the negative responses sound as if they haven't listened
to the speech.

Sounds like a damn good speech to me.

Inspiring, yes, but after the inspiration, he's addressing reality with real, smart, daring solutions.

Inspiring in the very best way: identifying and explaining damned good ideas; reminding and thanking legislators of their responsibility to real people, identifying and encouraging people to recognize the problems and the methods used by "the dark side" <my words, not Obama's>, and not to be fooled by them.

A little hero worship feels good. I luxuriate in it from time to time. It feels good to identify and appreciate good, on a deep emotional level. Once you know it, and feel it, you are that much better equipped to identify it.

I also trust myself to identify problems and respond appropriately, and I trust many others to be able to do that too.

For those who can't step back into rationality, that's fine, they are a minority. So are those who are determined to see nothing but ugly conniving.

89. They don't want to discuss the speech. Their purpose is to post derogatory remarks
about anyone who uses certain words. We aren't allowed to say we love Obama, even if we also say we "love" ice cream or rainy days, because that means we're stalkers or something. We can't say he is inspirational because somehow that means we are "deifying" him. Apparently the word "majestic" is also taboo.

If we say he gave a great speech, they say it's just words.

So, I guess we're left with saying Obama is just okay and that he occasionally speaks well.

74. Jen- I think this is why:
The wording was almost worshipful and the comment about those not being as inspired about it as the OP as being defective somehow..... Then there were some other comments that just seem way over the top as far as going from supporter to fan/groupie.

I'm sure it was a great speech- He always makes great speeches.

I'm still pretty hopeful he will do well.

I've really liked some choices he has made and really disliked others.

76. I have to ask a question
What exactly wrong with some people becoming "fan/groupies" of this President?

Every public figure has them and while you may not find it to your taste, these people are merely expressing themselves. Don't we live in a free society? Unless these people are actually stalking Obama and are somehow threatening his life, then I think their adoration for him is really nobody's concern but theirs. You find it distasteful, fine. But you don't have to come here and label them and ridicule them for their feelings. How productive is that?

82. yes we do live in a free society
We each have a right to our opinions.

She can say she think others need doctors if they don't find he same inspiration as she does and I can say I think its creepy that she feels that way.

Let's go to PMs if you want to continue talking about otherwise this is going to turn into another flamefest like the earlier deleted subthread.

It's getting to the point where I probably will just read DU and only talk in GBLT or the lounge.

42. It was an address and yes, he smacked down the GOP. Immediately
after the talking heads were saying that he was not bi-partisan. No matter what President Obama does, the GOP will never be satisfied, he should stop trying so hard to work with them. The media is now putting fear into Americans. Wake up people, you got yourself a great President, support him as we from out of the US are doing.

Welcome to DU

Contrary to what some may believe, supporting him does not mean I will agree with him 100% or that I think he is the messiah. But when he does something right, we should praise the action and support him.

47. M$M puts Obama on ignore, as usual
This morning's network TV:

CBS -- Led off with something about the plane that crash-landed in the Hudson 3 weeks ago. Six minutes in, a 3-second sound bite of Obama...then on to other news.
NBC, to their credit, led with Obama's speech and had several long clips. Then they put on the Newt to analyze it.
ABC -- Ten minutes in...still nothing but Michael Phelps.

:argh:

I forget how bad it is!.... geez, that is disgusting!! I can't wait to see them, all the networks, implode or something!! I do want to see them get what they deserve, however that might happen.....and see the network/everything owning pukes go down in flames. Oooooooo, now THAT would feel GREATTTTTT!!!!!

hunny and I like to relax with tv, so we just watch CSI type stuff (and puke at the assinine commercials), and then local news, mostly for the sake of seeing the weather.

No cable out here, and I refuse to pay for dish---damned wasteland.

Hateful asses... how DARE someone voice approval and support for the President?? How dare someone try to have this man's back as he tries to get this foolish country (put Bush in office twice) back on track??

As more than one poster in this thread has said, if the thought that someone would create an OP congratulating and heaping praise on the President fills you with such disgust that you have to come in here and heap scorn on everyone, well that says a hell of alot more about you than it ever could about Obama.

78. Thank you Jackeens. Because of this thread I read the transcript of the speech.
He really did a masterful job of pointing out that the Republics' ideas ruined our economy. He sounded tough and like the gloves are now off. I hope our Senators heard the speech too, since they're likely going to be voting today on the bill.

I was inspired by it, too, so this morning I called my two Senators, who appear to need some convincing. We democrats occasionally DO need inspiration to get to work.

It makes me feel good that people outside of the US see what a great President we've elected! And your are right about getting some inspiration to do some work! I'm glad I have a president that inspires me to kick my representatives butts to take care of the work we elected them to do and know that he's fully engaged and not trying to lead with fear tactics.

85. Yep. It made me realize that our work isn't over just because we won.
We can be excused for needing a little downtime after the inauguration. After all, we all worked very hard to get our democratic candidates elected. But we can't afford to slack off any longer. Our vacation from politics is over and it's time for us to do what we promised to do, which is to stay engaged and make our voices be heard.

and found spontaneous tears rolling down my cheeks. What an amazing human being, what an extraordinary "polititian"! We haven't seen the like in our lifetime. He is simply a unique phenomenon. Literally, the wisdom of a higher consciousness underlies every word and action. Of course, as he constantly says, he's far from perfect. But, he has the vision and will to work towards perfection.
Halleluia ! He has seen the mountain top and has the patience and perseverance to lead us towards it...

I heard this speech in the car driving last night and it brought a smile to my face. I just watched it now and it filled me with confidence that Finally we have a man in office who will stand up for what is right, not for what makes him look good. He will not run from a fight he will take it on calmly and rationally.

The pukes are trying their old tricks out on him trying to see how much they can get away with. It looks as though he will not buy into their false BS and will instead face it head on. It is going to be wonderful watching the republican party continue to implode over the next 4 years.

I saw the repubs talking heads today and they were pissed and so are the GOP senators. They are fuming mad, not that Obama slapped them in the face while asking for bi-partisanship support, but really they are mad because Obama spoke plainly to American and made it very clear that all this grandstanding and obstructive behavior is just unneeded bullshit at the expense of the american people. Obama gave a compelling argument and through some damn common sense in their faces and the GOP is pissed because they were starting to think that Obama was someone they could walk all over.
