office?

These would be the tax cuts Republicans said would never, ever happen because Democrats don't cut people's taxes.

These would be the tax cuts Republicans said didn't count as tax cuts because they go to people who don't make enough to have to pay income taxes (although they pay payroll taxes, sales taxes, social security taxes, etc.) and all working & middle class Americans - 95 % of working Americans as President Obama liked to say?

Challenged by one Republican senator over the contents of the package, the new president, according to participants, replied: “I won.”

The statement was prompted by Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl of Arizona , who challenged the president and the Democratic leaders over the balance between the package’s spending and tax cuts, bringing up the traditional Republican notion that a tax credit for people who do not earn enough to pay income taxes is not a tax cut but a government check.

Obama noted that such workers pay Social Security and Medicare taxes, property taxes and sales taxes. The issue was widely debated during the presidential campaign, when Sen. John McCain, the Republican nominee, challenged Obama’s tax plan as “welfare.”

With those two words — “I won” — the Democratic president let the Republicans know that debate has been put to rest Nov. 4 .

Well, damn, that was fast. :)

1. I for the life of me don't understand why people can't see
that he's literally kicking their asses. And he's doing it on cruise control. Wait until he really opens it up.

14. I hear you. The Repulicans have been screaming about these
tax cuts and he told them he won't back down on it. There has been talking head one after another complaining about people who don't pay income tax getting checks. I smile because they've raides SS for so many years that it is time for them to pay some of it back.

2. Just curious, where is the article from? Whomever wrote it has an issue with capitalizing President
Edited on Fri Feb-06-09 11:46 PM by Parker CA
It seems every other word or title that should be capitalized is except for President. Strange.

I agree though with the importance of your points regarding Obama getting these tax cuts through. Definitely an important check mark to put in our win column.

4. I was going to guess Republico, but either way, the lack of capitalizing strikes
me as a subtle way of demeaning President Obama's stature and importance. I might be reading way too far into this, but that's what I took away on first read. Thanks for the clarification.

5. That is incredibly odd. I wonder if they did that crap before January 20th. I remembered the

article from when the quote first came out because it at least explained what exactly the "I won" comment was a direct response to - the Republicans trying to get Obama to drop the tax cuts for people who don't make enough to owe Federal Income Taxes. I loved that it was one of the topics Obama told them was non-negotiable.

There is a reason they don't like these tax cuts. They help the "little people". Republicans are not interested in that.

accounts, real estate holdings, stocks, and bonds.

It was too deliberate to be anything but a slight to Mr. President. The only time the author capitalized anything to do with him was when "Obama" was the first word of the sentence and the author was forced to abide by sentence structure rules.

8. I wouldn't read into it, because you're wrong.
He capitalized the "p" when he said "the President" but when he says something like "the new president" or "the democratic president" it does not need to be capitalized.

9. Too bad that even people here don't get it
with the constant mischaracterization by some people of these as Bush tax cuts when they are the exact opposite.

10. That's because some people....yes, even on the Left,
don't bother to educate themselves much more than reading a DU thread.

Then they "Pose" as though they actually know something,
when they still don't.

12. Frenchie, what are you referring to? I thought the OP was quoting in reference to the tax
cuts that Obama campaigned for and has subsequently included in the bill that the pukes don't like. I didn't see a confusion that the * tax cuts were being misunderstood as being included.

I'm confused, will you clarify?

21. Frenchie, I know what you mean
Some here are angered over the tax cuts but the poor and middle class need something to help them right now. Money is very tight. We need spending and cuts right now.

13. He stood firm when the wingnuts tried to deprive poor people of relief.
http://www.balloon-juice.com/?p=16311

Obama says tax relief for some working families must come from payroll so even families who don’t pay income taxes get relief and they will spend it.

He said “feel free to whack me over the head because I probably will not compromise on that part.

Obama said that there will be time to beat him up and a time for politics. He said I understand that and I will watch you on fox news and feel bad about myself.
