Hey Republicans, Go Filibuster Yourselves!
Mad Kane’s Political Madness
Hey Republicans, Go Filibuster Yourselves!
By Madeleine Begun Kane

It looks like the Senate may end up passing a stimulus bill that’s smaller (spending-wise), larger (tax-cut-wise), and far less likely to work than the bill passed in the House.

I don’t know about you, but I’m sick and tired of Senate Democrats letting Republicans blackmail them with the mere threat of a filibuster. Here’s a thought: Instead of caving in to GOP demands, how about telling them to go filibuster themselves?

Find out if they’re bluffing. Make them work for all those concessions. Let the American public see GOP venality and obstructionism in action!

I have been thinking this FOREVER! What would be the American public’s reaction to seeing night after night of Republicans reading cake recipes on the floor of the US Senate while the country burns….. I can’t even begin to imagine the thinking of the Dems not forcing them to do this. The R’s are standing up for principles that only about 30% or less of Americans care about. But the other 40% in the middle don’t exactly understand what’s going on. They just think both parties suck. Dems need to make it obvious who is on who’s side! God this is so easy, and yet… people like Harry Reid don’t see it. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Exactly. This should have been the policy for the past 2 years. It certainly should be the policy now. Especially for things that are needed. Just file it under the politics of the past are over — filibuster or get out of the way.

2. Heh - I like the first comment....
Only thing to keep in mind: what if they DO maintain the filibuster ad infinitum?

Has to be considered.

4. The longest filibuster on record was 57 days against the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

The civil right bills sponsors refused to cave-in and withdraw the legislation. So after 57 days they finally obtained enough votes to end debate (67 votes were required to end filibusters in 1964) and the Civil Rights Bill of 1964 was passed.

All filibusters end.

6. (shrug) I prefer to consider what happens if my bluff is called...
Even if I go ahead and bluff. I still consider it.

But people can differ on that.

3. I'm not so sure.. this an extra spending bill.. They still have the regular
budget to suplement the programs that were thrown to the side. The PUGs cannot fillibuster the regular budget bill.. they only need 51 votes to pass the regular budget. The House is packed with Dems.. I'm sure we will get our sex education, food stamps, medicare/ medicaid with that bill. This is to set the tone of Washington.. to show the People who is willing to take the country down for "small minded, pettiness".. Everyone I talk to is pissed at the Pugs.. well almost all of them.. some are still Rush-heads and in general are idiots. If Obama spoke about bi-partisanship and changing the tone in Washington, and first thing out, he goes all partisan.. then, we'd have war for 4 yrs... Now, he's proven the PUGs as obstructionists and incompetant and willing to hijack the economy for an idealogy we voted down this election cycle... The HOuse dems porked the bill, knowing that some things could get cut and become supplemented by the budget bill. Chess and Checkers.

7. You realize that filibusters don't actually work like that any more.

Nobody has to read cake recipes. If there are not sixty votes for cloture, the bill does not come to a vote. There is no rule saying that anybody has to actually say anything. They could even go home if they wanted to.
