LBJ used to say if you won by more than that, you had given too much away. We have to give serious thought to doing away with the 60 vote requirement for cloture or at least reduce it to 55. There will never be universal health care, sufficient aid to education and other progressive programs so long as a super majority is necessary to pass key legislation. We ought to know that something is incredibly wrong when we are relying on Ben Nelson to save our nation from the same reasoning that plunged into the Great Depression. I hope the President has learned that bi-partisanship is a recipe for half measures and gridlock. Obama can be as nice to these people as he wants but it will not change their nature or their minds. We must remove the structural impediments to Democratic policies and we need to start with the archaic Senate rule which allows a minority to override the clear will of the people.

LBJ was a master at kneecapping the opposition, blackmailing them, and in general fighting dirty to get what he wanted passed. The modern day Dems along with Obama need to re-learn this skill, then we won't need to worry about sixty votes. Hell, the 'Pugs didn't worry about sixty votes because they were political street fighters. That's what the Dems need instead of these spineless, gutless wonders that are pissing our money and our economy away just so they don't have to fight.
