So Dick Lugar turned down Obama's offer to fly with him on Air Force One
Edited on Mon Feb-09-09 09:23 AM by Thrill
To Indiana. Man these Republicans are hateful pricks. I guess he doesn't want to give the impression that he supports his Recovery PLan. One more reach of Obama's hand, slapped by a Republican.

1. Not many would agree that Lugar is a "hateful prick".
Can you provide any context at all to this? Maybe a ... link?

20. Yes, they are.
They are starting out with Obama the same way they were with Bill Clinton. Digging their heels in the sand and refusing to support anything with a Democrat's name on it.

Frankly, their behavior disgusts me.

3. I'd rather have his vote for the plan than his ass on the plane
Might be he's showing independence now so he can play for the team later.

4. They need to unclench their fists
This was supposedly directed at tyrannical states but it should've been said to the Republicans:

"To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist."

5. No, they haven't tried to be cooperative at all with the new president.
It's time that Obama do what he wants to do and not worry about the republicans.

He might actually have to meet some of these people in his district in need.

13. Bingo
considering Indiana went for Obama, this is a pretty stupid thing to do IMO.

Lugar turns down Air Force One invite

My colleague Carol Lee reports that Indiana Republican Senator Dick Lugar won't accompany President Obama to his home state tomorrow, despite an invitation from the president.

Indiana's other senator, Democrat Evan Bayh, will be aboard Air Force One, along with six seven current and former members of Congress, one of whom, Brad Ellsworth, voted against the House bill.

A White House official confirmed that Lugar had been invited; a Lugar spokesman didn't respond to a question of why the senator would not be present.http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0209/Lugar_turns_down_Air_Force_One_invite.html

9. For those who have no clue what this is all about:
Lugar turns down Air Force One invite

My colleague Carol Lee reports that Indiana Republican Senator Dick Lugar won't accompany President Obama to his home state tomorrow, despite an invitation from the president.

Indiana's other senator, Democrat Evan Bayh, will be aboard Air Force One, along with six seven current and former members of Congress, one of whom, Brad Ellsworth, voted against the House bill.

A White House official confirmed that Lugar had been invited; a Lugar spokesman didn't respond to a question of why the senator would not be present.

Also on the trip: Rep. Fred Upton, who represents a district in Michigan along the Indiana border, who voted against the stimulus package in the House. But he also immediately issued a statement afterwards signaling he could be persuaded.

The House bill was “not the first step we should take to turn the economy around,” Upton said in the statement, while adding that he was “heartened that will fulfill his pledge to work together in crafting a bipartisan package.”

Obama invited Upton to his Super Bowl party last weekend, and the congressman was one of a small group of guests at White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel’s dinner on January 27, the night before the House passed the $819 billion stimulus bill without a single Republican vote.

So, one senator from Indiana will be on the jet, but one won't. And Lugar did not provide a reason why he will not be there. From this, one can only assume that Lugar is a "hateful prick". :eyes:

10. I don't know much about the man other than the fact that his state
is in need like the rest of the country and he has an R behind his name. I will say this, how many people flat out refuse a meeting with the President? Call it a plane ride or whatever but it's really a request from the President to talk. I find it very disrespectful and I am sure it wouldn't have happened had anybody but Barack made the request. I'm starting to really hate these fucks and I hope the voters remember this down the road.

11. C'mon guys, pick on Rethugs that really deserve it.
Lugar has praised Obama in the past and worked with him on arms control in the Senate. He would be the last Rethug to not like Obama.

19. thank you - and he is a Republican who was better on foreign policy
than most. His comments were strong enough that in 2004, Kerry quoted Hagel and Lugar on Bush's disastrous foreign policies. There were Democrats who were worse at that time - and not just Joe Lieberman. (there was little difference last year between Biden, Lugar, and Hagel on Iran and the need to deal with them diplomatically.)
