CNN conducted a poll in mid January about how favorable/unfavorable Obama was viewed, and the favorable got 78%.

I may be wrong, but this may be one of those polls. Job approval polls are not the same as favorability polls, and usually never reach 70% elsewhere, so that is what I am assuming.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — A new national poll suggests that three out of four Americans approve of the job Barack Obama's doing as President — but the economic stimulus package he's trying to push through Congress is not nearly as popular.

Seventy-six percent of those quesioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Monday give President Obama a thumbs-up when it comes to the way he's performing his duties, with 23 percent disapproving of the way Obama's handling his job as president.

While the President puts on a full court press, the debate over the more than $800 billion bill, which includes increased government spending and tax cuts, appears to have split the public. A slight majority, 54 percent, favor the bill, with 45 percent opposed.

And there's a partisan divide. Three out of four Democrats support the bill, but that number drops to 51 percent for self-identified independents, and just 32 percent for Republicans. Nearly seven in ten Republicans questioned oppose the bill.

Candy says yes it is too soon. This was after she tried to explain the difference between "earmarks" and "pork" concluding that "it is compicated" (for our little minds I guess)

She then specifically pointed out that Republicans didn't support it and that Indies are "split" -which they are.

Wet blanket treatment once they got a chance to get their story straight. In reality it is a really good poll for Obama considering the coverage he and it have been getting. In a CNN/Opinion Research poll, 54% of respondents said they favor the stimulus plan that the Senate is expected to pass on Tuesday. And 64% said they felt the bill would help the economy recover.

Over the weekend, senators reached a compromise agreement on a plan that would provide tax cuts, spending on infrastructure, housing and other programs aimed at creating or saving jobs. Two weeks ago, the House passed a similar $819 billion measure.

Of the 800 Americans surveyed from Feb. 7-8, 48% said the plan would help "some," and 16% said they felt the stimulus bill would help the economy "a lot." Only 16% said the bill would not help at all, and another 20% said it would not help much.

But 55% of respondents said that even the less expensive Senate plan would cost too much in spending and tax cuts, according to the survey. In addition, 30% think it's just the right amount of money and 13% said the government needs to spend even more.

If 54% support the plan (as is proposed, right?) and 64% think it will help the economy recover then what's going on with that 10% who mysteriously do not support the plan yet believe that it will help the economy recover? Wouldn't you naturally support something that you believe would help the economy recover? :shrug:

Those are actually pretty good numbers given the "full-court press" treatment that the.....um...press and the Repukes have given the plan.

The one thing that I am kind of interested in knowing is whether or not it's the current plan (as modified by Congress) that people are wary of or the plan that originally passed the house (pre-concessions, tax cuts)? IMHO it's easy to make the case that people are wary of and/or generally dislike the plan but again I wonder if making the changes that have been made (to appease the moderates) have helped diminish its support.
