I swear they have no sense--none at all. They would not know economic stimulus if it but them in the ass.

I cannot actually believe they even have the seats they do have. The designer of the Titanic must have been a republican.

1. just a correction
Edited on Mon Feb-09-09 10:15 PM by Skittles
the designer of the Titanic, Thomas Andrews, was an amazing, brilliant man. The stupidity was with the guy who wouldn't let him put all the lifeboats he wanted on the Titanic - for "aesthetic" reasons - Bruce Ismay (probably a conservative). Andrews went down with the ship; Ismay got in a lifeboat.

7. Yup. The designer was portrayed accurately in the Titanic movie with Leo and Kate
He was a very intelligent man. Ismay was a coward.

8. yes
Andrews spent the last couple hours of his life getting as many people into lifeboats as he could while Ismay got into the first lifeboat he could find. An extreme contrast in character, for sure.

21. And I dig Victor Garber!
I first noticed Victor Garber when he played Mr. Andrews. He seems like such a nice man.

He played Mayor Moscone in MILK and looks very much like the person he played, as does Sean Penn.

11. Also, IIRC, Ismay talked Andrews into designing the compartments to lower decks
Edited on Mon Feb-09-09 10:46 PM by Wednesdays
The inner walls of the watertight compartments were originally designed to be much higher, like up to B deck or something.

Then Ismay had Andrews lower the walls considerably because it interfered with pedestrian traffic on the 1st and 2nd class decks. (Once again, putting profit ahead of safety.)

Think of the Titanic as a great big ice cube tray. The water filled the front compartments and then overflowed into the next, and so on. If Andrews was allowed to keep those higher walls, the ship might not have sank.

51. Wasn't there a matter of the bulkheads, too?
The bulkheads were not all of the way to the deck, so water could easily rise from one compartment to another was made much easier? I think I remember hearing that they did not want the bulkheads that high because it would cost a lot more and make the ship look less luxurious.

Fuzzy memory, though...maybe I should do some Wiki reading.

that this is the ground Republicans are comfortable fighting on. They're right, of course. They're happiest when attacking FDR. Their voters in their 70's appreciate the GOP tenacity. Most folks under 60 are just scratching their heads, wondering why in the hell these old fogey politicians are re fighting the ideological battles of the 1930's.

20. Racial tension
No matter how bad the GOP fucks up, as long as they are the party that opposed civil rights 50 years ago they will carry 60-90% of the white vote in the south, and as a result get reelected every time.

They can be totally fucking incompetent, it won't matter. They will still carry the south. I think they know this too, which is why they pursue plutocratic policies that piss off the public. They know it won't matter in the slightest wrt reelection chances.

I cannot believe how incredibly stupid you are. I mean rock-hard stupid. Dehydrated-rock-hard stupid. Stupid so stupid that it goes way beyond the stupid we know into a whole different dimension of stupid. You are trans-stupid stupid. Meta-stupid. Stupid collapsed on itself so far that even the neutrons have collapsed. Stupid gotten so dense that no intellect can escape. Singularity stupid. Blazing hot mid-day sun on Mercury stupid. You emit more stupid in one second than our entire galaxy emits in a year. Quasar stupid. Your writing has to be a troll. Nothing in our universe can really be this stupid. Perhaps this is some primordial fragment from the original big bang of stupid. Some pure essence of a stupid so uncontaminated by anything else as to be beyond the laws of physics that we know.

AFAIC...give them the air time...they are looking more desperate for each 15-30 seconds they are out there. They have nothing but the same ideas that got us to where we are. Each time they speak, they drive people away in droves. It is the death knell of the GOP. I won't be going to the funeral, as I dont like standing in the rain alone...:D

30. It depends on what you mean by "stupid".
What I mean by "stupid" is "tone deaf to the concerns of average voters, lacking self-awareness to the point of having no idea how mean-spirited, dishonest and unhelpful they appear to the public".

That's kind of long, so I'd sum it up with "clueless". And that they definitely are!

34. They're doing a fine job
of showing themselves to be what they really are. To think that these exact same people used the exact same tactics to smear and destroy Democrats successfully. They haven't changed at all. As a matter of fact they are continuing to act exactly the same way they did when they had the power. We all saw them in action and wondered why media couldn't see them, or how Reid and Pelosi couldn't see them.

So naturally, because they really are unimaginative and because their leaders have left they are rudderless and unable to change with the times. Not change for the better, because that's just impossible, but change in tactics, in approach, in strategy to conform to the new paradigm shift that has happened around them. They don't get it. People have learned and adapted to them by becoming knowledgeable about their tactics and their goals. The majority of the American population has moved way past them. A good analogy is that the Republicans are the kindergarten teacher who keeps trying to teach high schoolers the same way.
