Obama and the Republicans-an analogy
It's not that Obama is giving the Republicans "enough rope to hang themselves"
they are already hanging

Obama keeps handing them knives to cut themselves off the rope
and the Republicans immediately take the knives and instead of cutting themselves down
they throw them at Obama

and they stay on the rope, getting nowhere, and looking foolish

1. Where are all the people who say Obama shouldn't reach out now?
Edited on Tue Feb-10-09 08:04 AM by Kahuna
Do they "get it" now? Obama is trying to grow the Democratic party. He's off to a fine start. Obama knows he can count on the repukes to play the same old tricks they've been playing forever. He is using that to our advantage.

If after last night people still can't see that, I don't think they will ever get it. The repukes are smarting this morning. Yesterday, Obama went to Elkhart, IN, a city that voted for McCain and was very warmly received. The repukes were watching and reeling. Hey repukes! You want to turn Indiana blue for good? Keep it up. We'd like to pick up some congressional seats in 2010. Today he's going to Florida. Same message. Keep it up.

2. Obama is also trying to get people engaged with THEIR government
Edited on Tue Feb-10-09 07:57 AM by underpants
the recovery.org website thing is part of it

Since Watergate the peoples have been told that government simply doesn't work, don't look we will take care of it
there also has been a concerted "You are just too busy to have to worry about this" giving people an excuse to not look what happens AFTER bills are passed and HOW money is spent

Great situation (both sides) to work with no one checking in on you

the press again thought they could take him down a peg or two but the poll numbers (CNN & Gallup) show that the peoples are basically giving him a break to fix this mess that they CLEARLY blame on the Republicans. The "too busy" thing also has backfired on them-yes people don't check in daily like you and I and everyone here do they just check in for the big events-check the winds-and when it is finished. The peoples are seeing that the Repubs are just blocking and in the end all of this is going to be an Obama WIN which we all knew but the Repubs are so worried about putting on a front (looking like they are doing something anything) that they didn't jump in and get on board when we all knew this was going to pass. They are so in the short-term "conquer the 24-hour-news-cycle" old habit that they aren't seeing the trees shifting in the new wind.

6. +
since I can't edit it now

the oddest part of it is that if, in this scenario, and the Repubs were actually successful with one of their knife throws
they would be cutting off the only source of a way to get themselves out the situation

Great throw Bob!
(much hooting and cheering followed by silence)
finally someone says, "Now what?"

8. Here's another visual
Every time Obama leaves the room all the Republicans are left...swinging...swaying...staring at all the opportunities (knives) left scattered on the floor
