I wish I had. Because today I discovered that there’s a fairly juicy little subplot in the book, involving one of Obama’s high school friends.

Ray, a fellow classmate of Obama’s, was also bi-racial, and also trying to define himself. But what set him apart was his colorful manner of self-expression. Ray cursed like a motherfucker.

This would all be snickerworthy enough, but it turns out that Obama actually read the audiobook version of Dreams From My Father.

And that means he read Ray’s quotes.

And that means you’re about to hear the President of United States using language that would finish Cheney off once and for all.

Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez working as garbage men.

Their supervisor was an older African-American dude.

There's a scene where all 3 were sitting in a diner booth for lunch, and the waitress brought over a big plate of fries for the supervisor.

I think Emilio's character pilfered a fry, and got his hand slapped.

28. That audiobook's not exactly a secret, and 4 years old.

I'm a little surprised that we didn't hear more about it during the election... along about Rev. Wright time, for instance. It would have far less negative impact now than it might have then, with the country getting to know him better and better as the intelligent, mature and reasonable person he is. It does make you wonder why exactly political enemies shied away from it then... when there's such a wide range of opponents, you'd think someone would have tried it.

Personally, I loved the book, and it's great to be able to get as far into our new president's head as that book lets you. It seems obvious that he actually wrote it himself, which is of course rare among politicians, and it's very personal, at times intensely so.

I have to disagree with the poster who said that listening to the audio is the "lazy" way, because with something so personal, hearing his own voice and his own inflections adds a great deal to what's on the page (don't get me wrong--I love to read, and most books are far better on the page. This sort of personal memoir is an exception).

Don't you love the fact that our president is BOTH an intelligent, mentally healthy person AND clearly a real person?
