Tweety Just Upset Me - His Comment That Obama Using The WH Bowling Alley & Going To Camp David......
that Obama was doing the "Orangeman's Walk". I think that's the term he used. He said that Obama is showing that this is all his - like marking his territory.

Why such a low shot?

Why couldn't he say something like Obama's a good father and wants to make things comfortable for his kids to adjust to this new life they have. So he bowled with them in the WH - a fun family thing to do - and he took them to Camp David to show his kids.

He had the chance to spin it in a nice, family, genuine, real way - but Tweety chose to spin it negatively.

I think Chris means these clowns:

Every year, militant Protestants go strutting around in Northern Ireland ostensibly commemorating the Protestant victory at the Battle of the Boyne. It's really just the old bigots "marking their territory".

8. Look up Orange and Orangemen in relation to Ireland, and N. Ireland
An Orangeman would be a Protestant loyalist to Britain, I believe, walking around making sure all the Catholics see him enjoying His Majesty's Irish possessions.

22. That's it, but there's more nuance to it than that.
The Walk takes place past Catholic churches, and through Catholic neighborhoods. It's a PARADE, and the cops have to line the streets so the Orangemen, who are basically saying Fuck You to the Catholics, don't get hit with beer bottles tossed from rooftops or what-have-you. It is an opportunity for violence; it's fraught with tension at best.

It's a "Nanny Nanny Boo Boo" on steroids.

The idea of the walk is to STICK IT to the Catholics, to make it clear that they're subservient, second class citizens, and to strut where you don't belong.

I think the use of the term was wrong and inappropriate.

21. I provided two links down below.
It has to do with the habit of the Orangemen in the "Bondanged Fourth Green Field" (Northern Ireland) to parade in a large, organized group, in front of Catholic churches and through Catholic neighborhoods, where they do NOT belong....SOLELY in order to piss off the Catholics--that was their only purpose. The idea on the part of those Orangemen is to let those "goddamned Mackerel Snappers" know who's in charge. It's a way to describe someone who is throwing their weight around. It's also kind of a bully's term.

Tweety is a Catholic. I don't completely "get" where he was going using the term (was his idea to press the "I'm in charge" idea, or the "doesn't belong" meme?), but then, I didn't hear it--I'm going on the report here. The term is generally used to describe someone who is strutting around, acting high handed, where they don't belong, with a goal to piss off the locals.

because it is difficult for him to go out in public for those very things.

He can't go to the local bowling alley and he can't make a weekend trip to get away at any old resort.

Tweety is probably reading from some script intended to attack Obama at every angle. They are trying to find something that will make the public fall out of love with the President.

17. Every President does it, and Tweety tends to be medically noncompliant with his
diabetes medications, which makes him shoot off his mouth stupidly and inappropriately. It could be a bit of residual racism popping up; guess all that time in the Peace Corps didn't totally eradicate that terrible 'tude???

He's very likely also got Saint Paddy's on the brain; probably because he (finally, maybe?) got his invite to a "breakfast roast" on the day next month, somewhere--he should be so lucky to get in on the best one, in Boston.

Some background to the term:

http://knowledgerush.com/kr/encyclopedia/Orangemen's_Day/
http://www.redorbit.com/news/general/7257/barricades_erected_for_n_ireland_march/index.html

The comment was just moronic, and inappropriate to the situation as well, really. The idea of the "Orangeman's Walk" is that the "Proddies" perambulate in rather snooty fashion past the Catholic churches and through the Catholic neighborhoods, with a specific purpose of pissing off the local Catholics.

Obama was elected with a substantial majority. He doesn't have to do any "parading." Those are his quarters, that's his palace and his prison for at least the next four years.

It's small compensation for the task before him, really. I hope he enjoys the digs.

36. As I sort of indicated elsewhere in this thread, I am not entirely sure
if the meaning behind his use of the term was to suggest "I'm gonna show you who is in charge--I'm gonna do my strut and let you know that I am the BOSS of you and all I survey" or the pompous act of a bunch of assholes who are, like bulls in a china shop, going where they are not wanted.

See, when you use the term "Orangeman's Walk"...why, where you stand depends on where you sit.

The Orangemen see it as an affirmation of their political, cultural, and of course RELIGIOUS dominance over Northern Ireland, a visible expression that THEY are in charge. The Catholics in Northern Ireland see the very same act as the dispicable, deliberate and vicious taunting of oppressed people by their oppressors--oppressors who strut past their houses of worship and parade through their neighborhoods to let those Mackerel Snappers know full well that they're "less than" and they'd best not forget it.

IF he meant it from the Protestant perspective, it's a bit less offensive than if he meant it from the Catholic view. However, I wonder, because Tweety is an active Catholic.

It was just a loaded term. But then, Tweety is a guy who loves the loaded term--and the inappropriate one, too.

43. Well, we'd have to ask him what he meant.
It could be that, or it could simply be that he was referencing the "arrogance of authority" that enables an Orangeman to parade where they will.

As I've said, where you stand depends on where you sit. The Orangemen believe that they own everything, and they DO belong anywhere in the north that they want to go--that they're in charge, they're the boss, they have the power... not those pesky Catholics. The Catholics are the ones who view them as unwelcome intruders in their neighborhoods.

I don't really know what was in his head.

It was a poor reference in any event. The only other thing I can think of is that perhaps it was a family expression, designed to suggest that someone was acting like the lord of the manor, or something. "Who do you think you are, prancing about like an Orangeman?" That kind of thing.

Sometimes, when these expressions are oft-repeated, the nuance gets lost.

23. Fuck Tweety - Bush was at Camp David or Crawford
Edited on Wed Feb-11-09 08:20 PM by RamboLiberal
almost every F'ing weekend he was in the U.S. And remember how Bush used to knock off early on Friday so he could head for Camp David? And the bicycle rides in middle of the day.

Bet Obama doesn't even come close to this record. By my rough calculation Bush spent 58% of the weekends of his presidency at Camp David and over 33% of his presidency on vacation.

George W. Bush is today making his final visit to Camp David as president.

He will likely miss the place: According to CBS News White House Correspondent Mark Knoller, today's trip marks Mr. Bush's 149th visit to the presidential retreat. The planned three-day stay, during which the president is being joined by family and former and current aides, will bring his total time spent at Camp David to all or part of 487 days.

Yes, that's 487 days. And Camp David is not even where the president has spent the most time when not at the White House: Knoller reports that Mr. Bush has made 77 visits to his ranch in Crawford during his presidency, and spent all or part of 490 days there.

Sometimes for more than a month, IIRC.

And most of the rest of his time was spent gladhanding at RNC fundraisers, catapulting propaganda in photo ops, and traveling expensively on our dime to other countries. With the bike rides and early bedtimes, I doubt he put in 15 hours a week.

55. Tweety voted for Micheal Steele in the 2006 Senate Race

He is also hung up on his Roman Catholic Irish heritage to the
point of a obsession.

62. You guys always complain about Tweety, yet you continue to give him
ratings by watching him. The best way to make him go away is to tune out his show. He will disappear for the most part except for becoming an occasional guest for laughs on KO or Rachel Maddow like Pat Buchanan is today. (Remember Buchanan once did have his own TV show.)
