Very odd timing too. Obama and his key press staff are out of DC. The WH office knows nothing of this. I'd be willing to bet Obama didn't know about this. They are doing anything they can to hijack the situation and suggest Obama is not easy to work with and that he only has the Dem's interests in mind.
